I'm constantly switching between Seagate and Western Digital drives. I've had more WD drives go bad than Seagate drives. I always used WD drives in the past. Currently all of my drives are Seagate drives and within the past 5-6 years I haven't had a single Seagate drive that I own go bad, including the 1TB drives. In that same 5-6 years, I've had 2 WD drives go bad.

This recent mess with the 1TB (and other) drives from Seagate, and the way they handled it, has really made me cautious. But really, I don't think anyone can know whether a drive will last or not. It may just be the position of the Earth to the Moon and Sun when a certain batch of drives were made that are all doomed to fail.
