Its not really that nasty. You have two options that can work.

1.) Stand with your backs against the ledge and either melee spam or shotgun spam, as the zombies have to jump over you (a few feet) to get down from above you.

2.) Just run straight through. 95% chance at least one of you makes it (if you split up), and then everyone respawns.

I haven't played that yet on vs. What did they replace it with?
Too much engineering, not enough gaming.

Option C. Shoot sonic in the back, run to farm house while hoard eats him

they didn't replace it with anything, you just run through the cornfield with no horde grief. the special infected team can make a grab for you, but the infected team usually spends just as much time as the survivors picking through the corn, and often the infected team tries to stop them at the crest of the hill, so everyone's dead and awaiting respawn while the survivors sprint through the cornfield. it is a good place to create chaos, but boomers have a hard time hiding, and it's more fun for hunters to jump off the barn.

yup, another issue with it is that since it's such a large open area (even though you can't see through the corn, it still counts as line of sight), infected have a very hard time spawning anywhere close to the survivors, so it's best to attack them earlier, or run up on them as a hunter and just slash away instead of pouncing...

the hardest campaigns are the ones without a closet or other funnel.

Although, in a horde rush, I'd be looking for any advantage I could, too, although we'd all be deaf firing 4 rifles repeatedly in a closet.
