    How would you tweak/change Left 4 Dead?

    While I think Left 4 Dead is a great game, there are still a lot of things about it that could and should be tweaked/changed to provide a better gameplay experience (specifically in versus mode). I'd like to attempt to have a rational discussion about things you'd like to see changed in the game based off of your experience with it so far, so please no trolling, flaming or general steam-forumish stupidity.

    One idea I've been playing around with is for the smoker to have a bit of a "yoink" effect with its tongue. Meaning that instead of an initial grasp and drag/pull, it's a grasp and yank, with the survivor leaving their feet briefly, and the tongue being immune to melee during this period (after a short distance when the survivor hits the ground the drag resumes, and melee will knock him free). This would help with the closet camping, and prevent melee spamming from having such a overpowering effect.

    Other thoughts and ideas?

    I'd like the "shock" effect of melee'ing a special to be decreased - when you stagger a special, they're basically standing still for 3 or 4 seconds. Even when a smoker victim gets released, the smoker stands there like a bitch waiting for someone to shoot him.

    I was thinking about a fourth player infected. One that makes no noise, moves quickly, and can blow himself up. When he kills himself (or is killed) he releases a cloud that the survivors must get away from, or risk taking large amounts of damage. With this infected you could slow down the survivors (blow up in a choke point) and more importantly stop the closet camping for every event.

    maybe when a Survivor dies during a versus match, they should become an infected, choose their power, and then play as that until round ends.

    So Zoey could choose Smoker, and then have a zombified Zoey smoking Bill....um, tonguing Bill.... you know what I mean.

    Fix melee. Running up and clawing as a hunter shouldn't be more effective than pouncing 95% of the time. You get melee'd once and you are dead because your screen goes white and you stand there for 2-3 seconds each time unable to move.

    Fix tier 2 weapons or infected health. Once you get autoshotties/rifles everything is worthless because you die in 1-2 hits. An effective Tank strat shouldn't be "find an open area and unload on it" because he'll be dead in less than 10 seconds every time.

    Make the smoker/boomer do damage when they explode, slow down survivors, something like that.

    I cosign on this, moreso on the Smoker's behalf. I think I recall reading that when the Smoker dies his cloud of smoke was to inhibit the field of view of the survivors. A nice gesture, that...but in my experience it does nothing of the sort. Sure, you'll cough and hack and choke a bit, but take two steps in any direction and you can see just fine.

    If anything, giving the Smoker a toxic death cloud would introduce deeper disposal strategies that are currently employed against the Boomer. As it stands, when a survivor is Smoker'd I just unload rounds at BOTH of them to free the bind, without the consequence of team damage. Introduce the feature, and you couldn't simply unload at a distance, you would almost be forced to take the time to walk up and melee your mate free (more time for the Smoker to do damage) then get a reasonable distance away before dispatching the special.

    Cmon Valve, this shit isn't difficult.

    Actually, all the smokers smoke does is disable voice commands.

    well, the Smoker is designed for remote tongueing, so requiring a melee isn't necessarily a good thing - the Boomer is completely different.

    I would allow the Smoker to be dispatched at a distance without much penalty to the captured Survivor, but I'd again change the "stagger" effect and let the Smoker have a chance to escape. A close range inhalation of the Smoker's cloud should definitely cause some pain and/or slowness.

    The Boomer's close-range effect is the bile explosion/horde call, so it already has a penalty inherent if you're close enough. I would like to see the bug fixed where, depending on location, the boomer's barf/explode doesn't always call a horde.
