    Wired: Why Duke Nukem Failed

If you're any kind of Duke Nukem fan you should head over to Wired and read their article on just what happened to everyone's beloved Alien stomper. It talks about about the key players, how they met, their huge success, and ultimate failure to delivery which has lead to law suits and all kinds of internet gossip.

It was never completed. Screenshots and video snippets would leak out every few years, each time whipping fans into a lather and each time, the game would recede from view. Normally, videogames take two to four years to build; five years is considered worryingly long. But the Duke Nukem Forever team worked for 12 years straight. As one patient fan pointed out, when development on Duke Nukem Forever started, most computers were still using Windows 95, Pixar had made only one movie Toy Story and Xbox did not yet exist.

Pretty interesting article. The blame seems to fall squarely on one person, and poor business management to say the least.

I understand it completely. New engines kept coming out, they wanted to release on the best possible engine, so they kept porting it, which lengthened the timetable.

What they forgot (see: Portal, FarCry2) was that gameplay matters more than graphics.

Agreed. Hell, they could have simply taken the first game verbatim, ported it to ANY engine they wanted, released it, received bacon, and profited. Instead they tried to reinvent the wheel and fell on their faces.

it really is a great article. what it sounds like is Take Two is hoping to get their hands on the Duke Nukem IP so that they can continue the franchise. that's not a bad thing IMO
