Marketshare Reports: Apple Grows, Dell Back On Top

Preliminary reports show some interesting numbers in the first quarter of 2008 with regards to US PC and Mac sales. It seems that Apple has grown significantly in their overall sales numbers, while Dell has reclaimed the top spot from HP.

Quote:
Gartner has published a preliminary report on U.S. and worldwide PC shipments for the first quarter of 2008. According to Gartner's numbers, Apple placed fourth in U.S. marketshare at 6.6%, up from 5.2% in the first quarter of 2007. Apple's U.S. shipments increased 32.5% year-over-year, far outpacing the total industry shipment growth of 3.0%
Note that the overall personal computing sales numbers grew at 3%, while Apple grew at 32% and Dell at 15%. I guess Jobs and Michael Dell might actually know wtf they're doing after all.

That's interesting - good to see Dell up there.. Just hopefully they continue to be a good company.

I'm not surprised with the % increase though - the fact that it's still increasing overall is good for all of us.

But %'s can be mildly misleading.. I mean.. Apple may have increased by 32%.. but thats from 762 to 1010 shipments.. so 248 more shipments than last year.

Dell on the other hand went from 4126 to 4775 shipments.. and increase of 15.7%.. so 649 more shipments than last year.... Still some 260% difference from the two companies.

If Apple is able to keep the same %increase for a while then they'll be able to take a considerable amount of the market over.. especially if the other companies continue to have less and less sales.

It'd be interesting to see what the figures were for the year previous to whats on that table.

i dont think Apple is gunning to be much more than 10%. With too much market share, they would be unable to support their products as effectively as they do now with their retail stores and phone support.

I love the Vostro 1500 I built for my coworker. Too bad he gets to use it.

I followed those links... I found it hard to believe how low the numbers were... That chart shown is U.S. market. So Apple, in 3 months sold a whopping 1,010 computers. Dell only 4,775. I never would have dreamed the number was so low. That averages to 1 computer sold by Dell per day per state.
Edit: Correction- that chart is thousands of units. So 1,000 per day. That jibes a little better. And HP still tops Dell worldwide.

6% market share, 80% market news. that's a good PR machine.
