I don't know much about it. but anytime I hear of an app by such a well respected company being rejected it makes me think something is fishy

Apple should make a statement. Rejecting apps of this magnitude deserve more than a "not approved" stamp without explanation.

But that's how they run their app store, take it or leave it.

As far as I know, Apple does give a reason for apps being rejected. A friend of mine has a few games in the app store, and he has had submissions rejected and was told why.

Apple rejected it because it's a phone app that replicates some features that are already included. I hope they reconsider that requirement and allow the app to pass.

I always get the sense that Apple is just "winging" it like arrogant pricks.

I'm not saying there isn't a reason at all, I'm saying that some apps like this, Sling, skype, etc should warrant an explanation.

"replication of features" is arbitrary, you could swing that in lots of ways.
