It's funny, because if you go to zinio.com on the iPhone, you get a couple magazines for free; one of them being playboy

it is widely rumored that playboy and the others are on borrowed time. apple is apparently looking to get the iPad into schools in a big way and wants all the riff raff out of the app store. rumors are that this was only the first step.

and you know what? it's not like there aren't other app stores and platforms out there. wanna jack off on your phone with an app? there's a droid for that.

if Apple wants to be Disney, that's great, but they need to announce it, not just randomly accept/ban apps whenever they feel like it. I know Apple people are okay with that, but prospective consumers and developers really should know what's coming.

well, apparently they're saying you already know Playboy is naughty bits and should therefore not be offended by it. that's dumb. it should be all or none because they're not making any money off of Playboy, they're just pandering to the whiners who want some kind of boobie access on their phone.

dude this did this to protect the developers too. everyday there would be a hundred new porn apps named " AAA THE BEST AAAAPP" which put them in front of the actual apps with a purpose in the latest listing area.

it isn't about 'apple people', it's about trying to be all things to all people, which they're failing at

Then it's a failure in the store listing. Either way, there is obviously a lack of published standards for developers to follow. And the random banning of apps is the worst example of a closed system.

I expect Android to become a horrible mishmash of garbage in the marketplace if they don't stay ahead of this kind of stuff, too. There have to be standards or separation, but those standards have to be known, not secret or arbitrary.

I'm not going to get into the "Apple people" argument, but I will say that overall I'm very surprised that by browsing the comments at macrumors, a lot more people seem upset over the prospect of a paid Hulu service, rather than Apple's willy-nilly policies regarding what's in and what's out of the app store (which to me is the much bigger issue).

Anyway, I keep going back to the fact that wasn't Apple really caught off guard with the whole idea of apps and an app store? It seems that they've never really gotten their head around it (and it is somewhat outside their general walled-garden approach, and the efforts you see now appear to be more about trying to bring it back under restriction more than anything else), and I'd think most of their issues could be handled with better sorting/organization, rather than just ambiguous approval/denial of apps, but once again I don't know if Apple has a true focus of what they want to do with this space.

a good post from a dev about the matter.

and I agree with you Joe that they need to communicate better going forward.

I guess I just don't understand the mentality of accepting Apple's 'solution' to this issue as "for the best". It's still completely arbitrary, and doesn't address the issue of throwing "AAA" in front of ANY application name to jump ahead in the app store alphabetical listing.

the problem isn't the bewbie listings, it's the unfiltered crap, whether bewbs or wallpapers or flashlights or soundboards.

And if developers like the one in Craig's link above are depending on Apple's alphabetical listing in the store to get 'noticed', they're doing it wrong.
