Ever wonder why process is named "BF2142Pace"?

Note: This only applies to the EA Downloader/EA Link version!

"PACE" is apparently an anti-piracy company (Welcome to PACE Anti-Piracy) for programs to enforce trials and ensure that programs are not illegally obtained. Now this may sound fine, but with some research, I have found that not only are its files located under the Application Data folder (under "PACE Anti-Piracy"), but it installs a kernel-level driver! I have not reviewed the EULA or any such documents for 2142, but there have been reports of other programs that use PACE that do not make any mention of the product or that it installs itself into the kernel as can be read more about here: http://q.queso. com/archives/001606. This would have gone unnoticed by me if I had not found it odd that the game was called "BF2142PACE" and if I had not seen "PACE Anti-Privacy" in the Application Data folder. I have no problems with companies protecting their programs, but at least being warned of packaged software, especially the kind that installs into the kernel, would be nice. I would also think that since PACE is a separate company, we should also be given the chance to review their EULA/Privacy Policy/etc, or at least told (in a more obvious manner) that "This program installs additional anti-piracy software to prevent illegal distribution of this product" somewhere other than the EULA (if it even is in there), and considering the nature of the additional software, it SHOULD BE.

The person who wrote the article mentioned above calls this act "spyware" in which I disagree, I call it bad business practice. In my experience, even programs that install actual spyware/adware/etc tell you about it (most of them any way), and considering that PACE does not pose as a threat or problem to 99.9% of 2142 users, why wouldn't they make it known?

Comments? Concerns? Riots?

**EDIT: CORRECTION: the process name is "BF2142PACE" sorry for the mix up, I didn't double check before posting (didn't want to open 2142)!**

Just thought I'd post the link to the thread on the EA forums (posted before this post, but contains much more active/interesting discussion)

UPDATE:

I have found that the EULA references licensing that remains valid 10 days, but is renewed after 3 days for another 10 days when you run the program, when that EA Downloader/EA Link box pops up just before the game launches, its validating/updating your license.

I also learned that PACE makes two major products: InterLok® and iLok® (iLok is a USB variant). InterLok® seems to be the product used in 2142.

This article claims that "InterLok® and iLok® install kernel-mode drivers on a Windows operating system, effectively becoming an extension of the operating system"

I also believe I should clarify what a "kernel" is. A "kernel" is the core of an operating system, such as Windows. This is the foundation on which the rest of the system, like Windows Explorer (the nice GUI shell) and other programs are built on. PACE, apparently installs itself into this "foundation" (or possibly beside it) which, if something goes wrong at the right moment during the install (power failure, computer crashes, CPU over heating, what ever) it COULD cause your system to NOT BOOT INTO WINDOWS and force you to reinstall. That is the reason why I would like to see better mention of this in the EULA and special mention during the install process.

CONTENTS OF POST
-Application Data
-Spyware or Malware?
-Registry Values
-EDIT: InterLok Driver License Agreement

APPLICATION DATA

I found another interesting thing about the "Application Data\PACE Anti-Piracy" folder, at least on my computer. The folder claims to be of size 2.25KB, but takes up a total of 8.00KB. The tree follows:

PACE Anti-Piracy
--7ut68RkAddUed
----Xo1WnzAUSzt.va_ (Size: 1.16KB, Size on Disk: 4.00KB)
--GYqw2sBZCrRLZQG
----OVcBywg4CCyfUr5.dl_ (Size: 1.08KB, Size on Disk: 4.00KB)

Apparently these files are given a specific amount of space to use by the system, but do not fill that whole space. To me, this makes it more believable that this is a kernel-level driver, by allocating more space than is needed, it ensures that the file can not run out of space if it needs to be modified or modify itself, which would add stability.

I will attempt to investigate more on what these files actually are with our violating EA's or PACE's agreements or protection measures, but I intend to find whether these files are licenses or the drivers themselves.

SPYWARE OR MALWARE?
On the EA forums, there seems to be much talk about whether or not this can be considered spyware or malware. This article seems to believe, because it installs silently with out the user's knowledge, that this is spyware. I, however, disagree. To my current knowledge this program makes no additional contact to anyone or anywhere other than EA Downloader/EA Link's validation and updating of the license, and it also does not track any usage data whatsoever. This disqualifies it from the spyware category in my opinion. As far as malware is concerned, the software does not intentionally cause damage to the system or anything else, which would remove it from being malware. I do, however, believe it to be BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE to silently install third-party software that installs kernel-level drivers that could potentially (in rare and extreme circumstances harm the operating system).

REGISTRY VALUES
Something I had forgotten to mention earlier was that the driver is named "TPKD" and I have heard mention of registry keys. Upon further personal investigation of my registry, I have found the following in the registry:

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PACE Anti-Piracy
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PACE Anti-Piracy
-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1659004503-2139871995-839522115-1004\Software\PACE Anti-Piracy

The values under HKCU and HKU seem to be identical, with HKLM being different and containing much larger amounts of hex data. I will look at these values again in 3 days after opening 2142 to find any changes in the values, as they look like they may be the licenses.

EDIT: INTERLOK DRIVER LICENSE AGREEMENT
It also appears that the documentation for InterLok is for PACE Licensees only, so although you are able to see download links, it asks for customer information in order to view the documentation. I did, however find a License Agreement by running their installer (but not installing) for their InterLok driver. I have uploaded the License Agreement here, but do not believe that it contains any worthwhile or useful information, and may not even be for the exact version of the product that we are concerned about.

I just noticed EA moderators DELETED that thread so I guess it is true

But I had a really good question that I posted there before the thread got deleted.

How does it install kernel level drivers on a Windows Vista 64-bit edition system and not cause a bluescreen or other issues? The EALink version of BF2142 works just fine on Windows Vista 64-bit edition with minimal tweaking (just compatibility mode for punkbuster). Normally drivers on that level will either not be able to be installed or will cause a blue screen because Vista 64-bit denies access to the kernel. Only recently Microsoft decided to allow select developers to be able to access it. Similar antipiracy protection measures, such as Starforce, have tons of issues and pretty much are incompatible with Vista at the moment.
