Weird glitches

So yeah, I'm playin Office no AWP and I'm just cruisin around and so forth. Next round I buy a flashbang and the icon that should be showing in the "just bought/just picked up" area on the right side shows a big...pretty much..screwed up looking box of the same color as the items you just bought, like the game didnt know what to show so it put up a bunch of scribbles in that color.

Sorry for the strange explanation, but my computer just locks up about 2 seconds after it happens, so not much of a way to get a screenie.

I did a complete uninstall, and deleted all the files, and reinstalled, and I still got this problem. It happened both times on only the no AWP server, and every time I'd just lock up, however the first time it did it was when someone bought an autosniper and in the kills section it did the scribble thing again and I was like WTF! and I checked the console to see what weapon was and as I got to the console it just died. Went back several times and it would randomly crash. Fresh install brought about the same things.

On a laptop running XP MCE SP2, got an ATI x1400 mobility with Shared Memory turned off. Running the game in 1280x800 widescreen, forced through the shortcut using params, CPU is 1.83 ghz celeron duo (dual core), 1gb of ram (2x512mb), 5400 rpm hdd, and going over wireless G using interal Intel PROset Wireless, however I'm like...2 feet from the WAP so I'm sure signal is no problem.

I have the latest DirectX updates as well.

Sometimes the 1400 has problems changing resolution after going on standby, or sometimes after changing too many times, like playing bf2, closing, playing source, closing, playing 2142, and then finally it just stops allowing res changes. Source will always work though, as I've set the params in the shortcut, therefore allowing it to continue using the 1280 res without changing to 800x600, or 1024x768 like the BF series does.

That's about all the info I can think to give. If you need to know more I can get the info. Maybe DXDiag stuff?

Anyways, Thanks in advance.

Overheating I'm sure is not an issue. Played source for weeks now and this is a first. I'm used to 2142 crashing, cuz that's EA's BS, and I'm used to the x1400 not changing res, as it's apparently not a "supported card". It's either something with source or Norton AntiVirus. What gets me suspicious about Norton is that when I would download the Mani Decal when connecting to the server, it would take ages, and I mean like 5 minutes to just download it, whereas before it would take a matter of seconds. One time the game somehow minimized and I saw a flicker of the "This File Needs to be Scanned" box with some crazy filename in it, which I didn't get a chance to see. I can't be sure whether or not Norton is the cause of this, but I know reinstalling source didn't help at all.

Also the laptop is only like a month old, so I'm sure the fans are still decently clean, and as far as I've seen when looking into them there's no real dust buildup.

How often should one clean the fans? I'll have to get some compressed air for that, since that's the only method I've seen (from these forums).

its really up to you how often to clean it however i do not recomend using compressed air because it will blow dust into it instead of gettting it out. try finding a very powerful vacum lol or something like that. and it might be norton i know sometimes norton makes it long for me to download things becaus its *** lol try disabling it and see how that works

Lol I should have been more clear on that. Remove the outer casing, and blow from the inside out. Anyways, I'm going to delve into DXDiag and my logs to see if anything happened. I'll constantly get this error window when loading maps sometimes. Restart usually fixes it.

Sorry for double post, but new info: Someone at school mentioned the same issue came up with 2142 for them. They turned off sound acceleration. Found this option in the DXDiag menu and turned both options off, 1 for my plantronics USB headset and 1 for my Realtek Soundcard. Will try again. Hoping for a fun game without problems but fearing the worst...

Meh. Things are working better ever since the DX Sound Acceleration change. No crashes since then. Fluke? Hope not...

I'll play a little more tonight and hopefully things are fixed.
