 : 92 nd | | Crash, Crash, Crash, Crash, Crash, Crash, Crash - Help! :( Every steam game I've tried has been crashing or locking up my computer so that I can't even alt tab, bring up task manager, or do anything. It's been happening a lot. I know it's not my Video Card because I can play any other non-steam game for hours without problems.
This is the pop-up error I get if my computer doesn't lock up: Code: "engine error : failed to lock vertex buffer in CmeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"
This is what X-fire says: Code: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<ExceptionReport Version="4">
<Application Build="28220" Command=""e:\games\steam\steamapps\******\counter-strike source\hl2.exe" -steam -game cstrike "/>
<OperatingSystem Type="2"><Version Major="5" Minor="1" Build="2600"/></OperatingSystem>
<Exception Code="C0000005" Address="0EC17E13"><Module Section="0001" Offset="00016E13" FileName="e:\games\steam\steamapps\****\counter-strike source\bin\vguimatsurface.dll"/></Exception>
<Registers EAX="033C0740" EBX="0EC9A8B0" ECX="0BFB0840" EDX="00000000" ESI="0BFB0840" EDI="0ECB406C" CS="001B" EIP="0EC17E13" SS="0023" ESP="0012FB9C" EBP="00000000" DS="0023" ES="0023" FS="003B" GS="0000" Flags="00210213"/>
</ExceptionReport>
What does that vgui file do? And is it responsible?
I even got a BSOD and it said the file responsible was NV4_disp.dll
but that only happened once.
Since then I've reinstalled my video card drivers 100 times. Nothing seems to fix this issue. I've googled, and nothing. Steamuser forums are fucking full of retards.
Has anyone experienced this? Can someone please help me

| | | after reading through some online forums, both the NV4 error in Nvidia drivers seems pretty common and the CMeshdx8 is also common, other than updating drivers, not easy to fix.
I do notice this happening a lot with the more advanced users, which leads me to believe there may be an issue when you do more than the average Joe (i.e., just play games, no tweaking, etc).

So uninstalling steam wont help I'm guessing?
I've uninstalled, reinstalled drivers for my video card 1 million times already
When I played on my newest account, which I've only played about 2 times, this doesn't happen.
Well I only played for 10 minutes. But it still didn't happen. This problem usually happens instantly.
I noticed this started happening after accepting HL2 gift through steam from one of my friends who had the orange box. I've been reading and this is supposedly happening to a lot of TF2 players.
I don't know what to do.

 : 92 nd | | I just reinstalled drivers again, even sound drivers..
Tried sr office..
and I was getting artifacts and the characters hands were fucking yellow!
I thought it was my card but then I ran COD4, it ran perfect..
Is COD4 openGL? I'm beginning to think this is a openGL problem

| | | It's not an openGL problem, counterstrike used directX.
Perhaps the problem is with X-Fire, have you tried playing without running X-Fire?

 : 92 nd | | | Well, so far I haven't gotten a crash or glitch after deleting my whole maps folder. I only kept all the CAL maps. I had over a gig of gungame maps.. yikes
try that, see if it works for you.. so far I'm good.

 : 92 nd | | | OK, now I'm starting to think it's a memory leak of some sort.
Or maybe HL2 is damaged, or something.
Just now while joining office, the "retrieving server info" progress bar was stalling.. and trust me, I know how long it takes before it actually says "sending client info". Sometimes it freezes when it even says that, but thats after the delay and then my computer locks up.
Now, when it was stalling at the first step, I ctrl alt del and brought up task manager.. it minimized my css window (in the middle of still loading) and it abruptly said "Not Responding" but then it just changed to "Running". I alt tab back in game and it was running fine, no crashes.
My guess is that there is a memory leak of some sort, some program causing this? Or maybe I have to run HL2 at low priority? Any thoughts?
Any programs that can determine where the memory leak is to see if this is the cause?

My card is DX10, but XP doesn't support it
I've been reading through the net, and ran into a page that said something about the 8800 having a common issue.. which is video memory leak. I doubt it's that though, since all other games run fine.
