Do all games do this? I know of a ton of ad/spyware that run periodically (so your description fits that perfectly), and when they do, they lock up the machine in a big way.

Run the task manager outside of the game for a while and see if the CPU usage spikes up.

The other thing it could be is a damaged file. Something recoverable, but while it's going down, causes a big backflush of errors. Check the windows application event log

In Vista, things like the Trusted Installer run every so often and reduce your system to tears.

is comcast your provider? A few of my buddies are having the exact same problem the comcast, they called support and i guess they oversold their nodes, or something.
