Layman....
A person who is not a member of the clergy or a given profession. In the old days, the clergy were the most educated, so "in layman's terms" was for the uneducated, so they could easily understand something.
Generally now used when a person is not knowledgeable in a certain subject due to a lack of education on it. Nonprofessional.
