HL, CS, CS:S, Valve, Steam - ?????

Okay, can somebody give me the rundown on all this Half Life stuff? When I got my laptop, I bought a few older games to match the older performance of the 440. Since HL2 was all the rage at that time, I decided to get the original HL to see what the hoopla was about. I bought the platinum edition that has HL, Counterstrike, and some of the other games. Now I see that everyone plays Counterstrike:Source, and I hear about Day of Defeat, but I'm told I need Steam. What is Steam? What does this give me that I don't already have? Is it just an online server? If anyone can give me the "Dummies Guide to HL and all the variants", I'd appreciate it.

Steam is Valve's way of distributing and regulating HL-2 games and mods based off it. Basically you download Steam (steampowered.com) and register you games using their CD-keys. The CD-keys are tied to your Steam account, NOT your computer so if you were somewhere else (gaming center/buddy's house/whatever) and wanted to play you can download the game through Steam on your account and then play it. Steam is the only way to start up HL-2/CS:S/DOD:S(not out yet). Check out steampowered.com for more info...

But what if you already downloaded the game from Steam? Do you still need to be online just to play single-player Half Life 2?
