installed user base is very important.
It is used when developing companies decide what game/console they want to code for next.
It's used when a console company begs developers to do a game for them next.
It's used when a console company decides whether to move to the next generation of hardware, if they want to do backwards compatibility, if they want to add peripherals instead, which peripherals, etc.
Yes, having good games matters. But many times those good games (other than franchised games like Halo or Mario) come from developers who look at the installed user base (6 million vs. 1 million) to decide which console is going to get the next Gears of War, or the next Crysis, or the next Hellgate.
I'd rather develop for a possible 6 million sales than a possible 1 million sales.
