| | | Dell to Cut Jobs and Costs Quote: |
Dell reported an $11.6B profit last year, but the company apparently isn't satisfied -- it just announced a plan to shave off $3B in costs over the next three years. As you'd expect, it's going to take a little more than off-brand soda and thrift store uniforms to achieve the sqeeze: 6,500 jobs are due to be eliminated (on top of 3,200 already cut) and a desktop manufacturing plant in Austin is scheduled to close as well. The big chunk, however, is going to come putting the squeeze on design, manufacturing, and logistics, as well as cutting component and material costs across all Dell product lines. That's the part that has us a little worried, actually -- we're fans of new Dells like the XPS M1330, here's hoping this doesn't mean a return to beige boxes.
| Well, here goes some more American jobs with our already falling economy and dollar. We have to stop outsourcing and bring some more jobs back to the states that are 'no union'. It'll be a sad place here when our parents are dying along with social security and medicare.. LiNk

| | | problem with Dell is they stopped being relevant. Their server quality went to the birds and their home consumer segment was targeted at what seemed like senior citizens. They haven't done anything exciting or cutting edge for years, and they stopped being able to trade on their low prices as people like HP were able to meet their price and beat their product at the same time.
I'd like to see dell come back, but I'd also like to see them structure pricing so anyone with a brain isn't offended by the way-too-obvious price gouging on all dell models during customization. Come on, +$250 to go from 160GB to 320?

| | | I hate Dell, at my job they always buy from Dell and waste mad money on things like Vega said. I've told em, buy it without all that stuff, I'll buy it and get it installed for cheaper and with better parts. "No, no that's too complicated...." Ok, your loss.
Dell sucks ass, they're overpriced and they just suck. Now they're taking away jobs. "They took ur jubs!" (southpark style)
I'd like to know another company to buy workstations from that isn't Dell, maybe I can put the company onto that. |

| | | Dell sold themselves out. Lost their quality associated with their brand.
They probably also expanded into too many markets at once.
I believe the beg. of the end for me was when they outsourced to India
Also, it's been proven that cutting jobs doesn't always save money...
Hopefully with Michael Dell back in as CEO, he can start to turn things back around. He had a year, now he is out of excuses.
