FTC Stictens On Ratings

In this article, the FTC sent "fake" shoppers into stores to see if they would sell minors M-rated games. That's 42% less than in 2006, and 82% less than in 2000 (first study).

Quote:
May 8, 2008 - Videogame retailers as a whole have shown vast improvement in their efforts to restrict sales of mature-rated games to minors, according to a recent study by the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC sent undercover shoppers to specialty retailers, discount stores and electronics stores to test clerks' adherence to Entertainment Software Ratings Board restrictions on the sale of M-rated games to consumers under the age of 17. According to the results of the test, 20 percent of mystery shoppers aged 13-16 were able to buy M-rated games. That's down from 42 percent in 2006 and from 82 percent in 2000 when the study was first launched.

"Video game retailers have clearly stepped up their efforts to enforce their store policies, and they deserve recognition for these outstanding results," said ESRB president Patricia Vance in a statement. "We commend and applaud retailers for their strong support of the ESRB ratings, and will continue working with them to help ensure that these levels of compliance are sustained if not further increased."

Dan: that was...very uncomfortable Tempz. You might want to edit further for Chris Hanson reasons.

Noooooo! I can barely get any games now as it is. My parents won't buy M games for me and even though I look 18 the clerks won't budge.

EDIT: My parents won't buy any games for me except my dad will on special occasions.

Dear Mr. the guy with the biggest stick,

The rating system for games and movies is "rigged and stacked" and is based on the media and dumb critics alike. Alot of good games offer learning experiences even though some of them are rated M, or T. Why deny children learning experiences. I mean sh3t.. I was getting taught about s3x, and girls in health ed, in 7 grade, I was only like 12-13 at the time. If kids don't understand right and wrong, if it be acting out sh3t they've seen in a violent video game, or a movie.. its only partly the game, or movies fault.. It's the parents fault. See.. I was beaten rarely as a child, so I did at least know what it felt like. The next 10-20 years is gonna be pretty nasty if the USA keeps going in the direction it is.. people keep talking smack about how its gonna be, but has anything been done yet? It's so bad right now, I don't even think one of the presidential candidates even will be able to fix things. Schools are getting bad as far as general mood and kids willing to learn, also alot of teachers are still getting shafted as in pay / supplys / support.. etc, and also acting moody. The prisons?.. ha don't even get me started with the prison system its pretty sick though hearing about 200 inmates living a about a half basketball court size room etc.

The FCC and feds in general keep allowing corps to treat customers and investors like sh3t half the time as far as customer service and support gos, not necessarily all corps and companys but theres alot that need to be professionalized and re humanized as to how they conduct there businesses.

I could go on.. sorry heh

/rant off

P.S. - Don't start the revolution w/o me. I'm joking of corse.. but still.. heh
