: 44 th | | | EGM refuses to review Metal Gear Solid 4 Quote:
Tycho of Penny Arcade said that if you run a publication that reviews videogames, you need to have a review of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This is a need that Konami is well aware of, and if you haven't heard by now, the publisher has been imposing strict limitations on those reviewing Kojima's latest opus. Why? Because it knows those publications need their game, and will jump through hoops for their precious review. Or will they?
Rather than crook the knee to Konami, EGM has actually refused to review Metal Gear Solid 4 thanks to Konami's demands that nobody mention the game's alleged large install sizes and cutscenes. While IGN is perfectly fine with bowing to Konami, EGM has at least shown that its reviewers can't be pushed around so easily. The magazine has instead compromised with a roundtable discussion of the game as opposed to a full review

| | | it's like when a crappy movie is released, and they won't show a preview to the critics, to avoid bad reviews and make people spend their money without knowing what a suckass flick it is.
I think putting specific clauses in to game review sites is supremely shitty behavior. I agree with EGM.

| | Well, MGS4 is half the reason most people are buying PS3 these days, so if it proves to be an extremely overrated game, then that would hurt both Sony and Konami.
But I agree this is ludicrous. The people deserve to hear truthful and complete reviews, not dumbed down praise on a game which may not be all its cracked up to be.
I still think MGS4 will own tho. No PS3 tho

| | | There has already been a bunch of talk about the cutscenes. Maybe they just want to make sure the other aspects of the game are getting reviewed as well.

| | | I agree with you cipher, but you still can't put restrictions on reviewers. Perhaps you can request them to focus on other parts of the game but they still have to go through everything, it's the point of a review. To let us know what it's like, what's good and what's bad and if it's worth it. The game will def. be worth it but they still need to fill us in before we go out and spend our money. I, for one will not be buying a PS3 for this (I don't like the controller, it's too small), maybe later when people aren't killing themselves over it. |

I understand the "need" to keep things about your game secretive until launch, but there are ways to notify people of *SPOILERS*, etc. You can't take certain parts of an entire game and leave them un-reviewed, for the sheer fact that you can't legitimately even rate a game without including EVERYTHING.
I'm not saying the cutscenes are going to be the worst part, but perhaps the install times are? And rightfully so, if they detract from the game, you should be able to include it in and/or let it affect your review.
Whatever, this game better be a goddamn 11 out of 10 with how much Kojima is beating around the bust.

| I've heard from a few friends that GTAIV turned into a letdown for them. That it just wasn't as good as it was hyped to be.
