: 72 nd | | | Rumor: Microsoft Going 3rd-Party With X360 Hardware? Sounds crazy, but Kotaku has an article about Microsoft allowing 3rd-party manufacturers to make their own XBox360 consoles. Quote: |
We'll tell you what's up with Microsoft: new hardware options. It may sound totally insane — trust us, we did a double-take the first time Qmann whispered it in our ears — but word has it that Microsoft may begin allowing third-party manufacturers to create Xbox 360 hardware. And we're not talking about peripherals, people; we mean hardware that runs 360 game discs created by someone other than Microsoft.
| Could be very cool... yet I highly doubt this to be true. But who doesn't love a good rumor time and again, eh? |

| | Could be a huge win. Look at the IBM PC. High cost along with little innovation. When all the "clones" came out, the market got competitive and the products cheaper and better.

| | | Just don't see this happening. They are trying to beat out Sony, and would give up millions in this way? Just can't see it.

It would also allow them to get out of the hardware business, and let more companies contribute to the system in different ways, letting them take the risks, while still bringing in licensing fees.

| | | I can confirm this being true since I have no connections anywhere in this industry.
I seriously think this is cool as you all have mentioned, but also has its down side. How are warranties going to work, is it going to take longer to send it in and get back? Whats likely hood of DOA increasing or parts not working well together? What if one kids 360 with like a samsung and toshiba parts play games, but another kids 360 with IBM and hitachi parts not.

| | | well, it's the same right now. All parts for the current 360 aren't sourced from the same manufacturer, but they work together.

: 69 th | | The only problem I have with this is we'll end up with a bunch of systems that nobody knows which to buy. Look at the Sega Genesis hardware, not only was there 4 revisions of the hardware (1/2/3/CDX) but 2 attachments (32x/CD). There were also several 3rd party (official) units (JVC X'eye, Laserdisc with Genesis attachment, the Sega TeraDrive and even a boom box with support).
It might get too confusing, but if the hardware works better than the current non-Elite models then I'm all for it
