| | | Sony To Compete With Apple By Way Of PSP Phone? Quote:
TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp is considering developing a cellphone-game gear hybrid in a bid to better compete with Apple Inc's highly popular iPod and iPhone, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate launched its first Walkman three decades ago, dominating the portable music player market, but it has been running far behind the iPod and iPhone in recent years.
Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson's mobile phones, the Nikkei said.
| Why not? I mean if you look at the position Sony is in (not a great one at this time), you have to assume they're looking for a homerun and are willing to throw up at least a few hail-Mary's to get it. I think this could be a very good product because both Sony and Ericcson make quality stuff. Though the x-factor with these phones as of late seems to be more of the services (app stores being the biggest) and not necessarily the hardware.

| | | they COULD do it, but then they'll make it $400 with a $100/month data plan, and no one will buy it.

| | | I don't see it competing with Apple.
Developers are already turning away from the PSP because of the rampant piracy, high licensing costs, lack of drive, etc. The PSP Go is not selling well at all in the UK with preorders; it costs too much.
Sony has to do something, though. Not only are they reporting record losses, but they're not giving in to price drops for the PS3 or other things. Activision threatened to drop support Sony altogether if they didn't lower their prices. Sony responded to this simply stating they're not going to lower the prices, and that they have a bunch of titles lined up that they think will be good. Activision is a major publisher, and Sony basically couldn't care.
