| | | Dial Up? w/Online Gaming? Hi. Im very new too PC games, and I also have Dial up, and Im checking out First Person shooters that can be played online, and also has an involving Single player campaign most likely Halflife 2. Im also checking out some of the MMORPGs' like Guildwars, or World of Warcraft, most likely Guild wars cause its free.
Now the big question, could I game online with my 56k dial up(Broadband is not available in my area)? Will it be playable, or will their be way too much lag? Thanks for your help.

| | | If your not on a budget i would look into a wireless broadband connection such as a Sprint or Verizon EVDO PC card which can flatten your 56k connection. If you dont have to pay for 56k then its probabaly not as attractive but in most areas EVDO bursts up to 750K and maintains a good 3-400k connection.

| | | Thanks DELL-Machina.
I dont fully understand what you mean though. Do you mean I can buy a PC card, that will help speed up my 56k dial up? Or do you mean I should try to find a broadband connection, like DSL, cable, Direcway(this is my only option for highspeed I have, and its like 600 bucks to set it up). Thanks again.

Anywhere you get signal from the perspective carrier, you get broadband speed via PC card. Only catch is you have to have a service plan with the provider......
Guild Wars can be played with a 56K modem. Its not supposed to matter with ArenaNet. Anywho, soo you on the Wars. Im Solo Barics Rock

| | | PS: why $600 investment for hi-speed??? It should be like $150-$200 initially to get a modem and router to get going. $600 sounds a LOT higher than it should be.

The highspeed connection I was talking about is through Direcway, which costs about 600 dollars, to set it up. This is the only form of broadband, DSL, cable or satelite internet connections that is available here in the desert. Im currently on dial up and just dont have the money for direcway.
You kind of make it sound like I should be able to get wi fi internet any where. Are you saying I can just get a modem pc card and router and I can get Wi fi? Sorry Im a noob outside of dial up.
No Im not on guild wars, I dont have my new laptop yet, probably wont be getting it for about a month, but I will be picking up guildwars when I get it, so I will look for you on their, If dial up works alright with GW. Thanks for your help.

Andrew | Satilite kind of sucks for online gaming too. Your ping will be pretty high, and inconsistent. Pray it doesnt storm or get cloudy while you are in the middle of a game. |

I had satilite tv for years through Dtv. If you got a heavy rainstorm or even semi heavy it would lose signal. |

| | | I used to play NWN with a bunch of 56k-ers, they had some lag, but they said the game was definitely playable. In fact, I played on 56k a few times as well...and it wasn't bad at all. As for Guild Wars, I play on a cable connection so I could not tell you first hand, however, I will be visiting relatives in December who only have dialup so I will test it out then. NWN2 is supposed to be released next summer, don't know if its 56k friendly or not. I don't play FPS, but I would imagine it would be awfully difficult to stay alive with the impending lag. | | |
