Report: 5 Things You Didn't Know About Pro Gaming

Quote:
1 - You can make serious bank

It may seem odd, but you can actually make money playing video games. Keep in mind, however, that the guys who earn serious cash gaming for a living aren't like your friend who spends too much time on the couch and not enough time talking to the ladies. They're not only talented, they're also dedicated. They practice for hours on end and constantly seek out better competition online and at LAN parties.

With the stakes as high as they are, top gamers can't afford to get soft. In 2004, the top prize at the World Cyber Games was $400,000, while the top player, Fatal1ty, has earned over $500,000 in tournament play and his endorsement deals will likely soon surpass what he earns playing.
Sweet! I'm totally going to go Pro and specialize in being the leetest Boomer ev4RR!!!

meh. Cyber Gaming will never be that big, because when it comes down to it, it's just some kids that spend way too much time playing video games.

It's like bowling. It has it's fans, but no one is going to know the names of anyone except maybe the very best person (like Fatality).

Also this seems a bit outdated. The CGS (the most televised Pro Gaming tourney) folded. Outside of Fatality, I bet most people don't know more than 5 "Professionals" and the only reason that they know him is because Creative has a whole line of stuff with his endorsement. Oh yeah, and $400,000 which was the top prize, is just above the MLB league minimum.

I know of FPS Doug.... see, there's far more success to be had in doing spoofs and creating a pseudo variety show centered around gaming.. but stuff based directly on competition? not unless they mix in tackles and cheerleaders
