I think your first thought is more on the right track...I know television advertising rates have fallen significantly (which is why you see the slap-chop, magic jack and other infomercials more)...I suspect internet advertising would be the same.
I saw this today on Sports Illustrated's website. It's a banner ad for Left 4 Dead, Valve's zombie survival title we're all so familiar with. What struck me the most was that this means one of two things. Either Valve's so disgustingly rich that they are going to hit the biggest media sites they can to further their domination of all things PC gaming. Or, they're actually seeing a slow down in business due to the global recession and they're pulling out all the stops to generate new business. Either way, it's just cool to me that our little slice of nerddom is reaching so far and wide these days.

You're gonna love my nuts.
Followin' me zombie guy?
well, down economies mean you need more advertising, though I don't think Valve is doing poorly.
It's a smart place to advertise, too, target audience.
Valve ftw, mad SI guys and ESPN fiends play a lot of games though. Most of the ones I know do so this makes sense.

This is the time to advertise like crazy. In as many places as you can. You need as many irons in the fire as you can.
All this has happened before and will all happen again.
