Best Buy To Launch New Gaming Magazine Called @Gamer

Looks like everyone's favorite electronics retailer is getting into the magazine publishing racket with the launch of a new gaming-centric periodical called @Gamer. Without a doubt this will very much be a marketing tool to push people into Best Buy stores and to their dot com to purchase games and gaming hardware.

Yet one still has to wonder at the sustainability of such a business venture these days. Certainly Best Buy knows as well as anyone that magazine publishing is about as promising a business model as selling liquid mercury door to door. Perhaps their physical magazine will be complimented with an e-reader and online version with much more interactive content? One can only hope of such.

One thing I can tell you from personal experience is that Best Buy doesn't do much wrong so they must have a plan that is not of the norm in this case. Love them or hate them, they operate a profitable operation in far and away the most cutthroat segment of retailing today. They're a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them. Keep an eye on this development, it could mean good things for us gamers.

I still have a sub to Game Informer, I like print magazines and newspapers for that matter but the reality is online news is light years faster. One advantage a magazine can get is exclusive previews to games so I could see this working.

WAYYYY too late in the game, Best Buy. Should've dipped your hands in the game-mag market about a decade ago; jumping on board while the ship is sinking isn't such a smart idea. God forbid it would be a shame to see print go the way of the dinosaur, but at this rate it seems more inevitable than not.

The only reason I have a Game Informer Subscription is because of EB Games giving you a FREE year of that god awful rag, when you get their EDGE card.

Don't be surprised if many subscribers are lured in like this. Doesn't Best Buy take trade ins these days?
