Gamepro Reviews The History Of Star Wars Video Games

Gamepro has a very good article that covers that last 27 years worth of Star Wars themed video games:

Star Wars is the most prolific franchise in gaming history. Its games -- 88 if you include each expansion and arcade game -- appear on every console and home computer and reach into every genre, from arcade shooter to strategy games. It features smart role-playing games, addicting shooters, and has even turned games into multimedia events. While not beyond cashing in on popular trends, LucasArts' development of the Star Wars franchise mirrors the growth and increasing sophistication of the industry.
Without a doubt my top three are the original Star Wars arcade game from 1982, Dark Forces for PC in 1995, and Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast for the PC in 2002.

The arcade game bring back a lot of memories. I remember shoving quarter after quarter into it in my youth. The cool thing is that there was an interactive history of video games display in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry a few years back... I got to show my kids as they had a working machine. It felt like coming full circle seeing them play it.

The Force Unleashed (excluding Wii version) was really fun. Hyped for the sequel.

KOTOR is my fave Star Wars game, followed by the original wireframe 3d game. Then maybe the doom clone Dark Forces.

Gotta agree with Dark Forces. Hell, the second one was pretty good too. If you could get over the hella-cheesy movies in between each level, that is.

I remember wasting a lot of time on the old NES Empire Strikes Back. I'd get as far as Dagobah, and then I'd get instantly killed by some giant ass grasshopper thing. I think my brothers got as far as cloud city. Damn that game was hard.

Man-o-man do I feel old now. I remember being in 1st grade and wanting Empire Strikes back so bad for my 2600 after playing it at a friend's house. At the time, I was only allowed 1hr of TV and video games combined, so I spent 30m on Empire and the other 30m watching Mr. Wizard.

Such a dilemma when I got Jedi Arena the next year.
