    The Vive

So my Vive arrived on friday.

The set up is a little bit of a faff, mounting the Lighthouses etc but not difficult. The software is pretty good at keeping you on the right track.

All the kit feels solid and well made. The headset itself takes a little bit to adjust properly so its comfortable and your eyes are set in the sweet spot to minimize any blurring at you can get when not looking directly ahead. But you could happily wear it for a few hours at a time depending on how active the game was.

The hefty cable coming off it is an unavoidable nuisance, but its suprisingly intuitive to know when you need to move it or step over without looking.

Optics are a good bit better than the DK2 i had previously , there is still a wee bit of screen door effect but you totally do not notice it when you actually look at the games and start playing them.

But man, what a bloody rush playing the games. It really is true, unless you actually experience it you cant convey how "there" you are. With roomscale and the controllers , being able to walk around a room , pick stuff up, interact naturally and logically is amazing.

I will say, to get the most out of it a big play space would be ideal, I'm using the minimum allowable with Roomscale but if you had more it would be very handy for some of the experiences. BUT its perfectly do-able in a small room, I'm only using an area of 2mx1.7m and its fine . Just a wee bit fiddlier.

"Budget Cuts" Is a great example, having to actually duck behind a desk to avoid being seen, or poking your head round a corner to get a sneak peek at the next room to see where the guards are. Not to mention throwing knifes , where its your actual throwing skill that matters, not your mouse precision.

"Audio Shield" ( from the makers of audio surf) I thought looked totally meh... But got it after seeing some reviews I thought I'd give it a shot. Its totally fantastic, the haptic feedback on the controllers adds another physical layer to the immersion. very good indeed.

"Holopoint" Kinda like the Matrix, but in a Dojo, And With a bow & arrow. Totally exhausting but does make you feel like a super hero.

The day after all these I ached in places I didn't know i could.

So in summary, Over Priced, unreasonably High PC Spec requirements, You look like a total Idiot, Totally worth it.

did you really just ask if Bo has his cwp?

he shot his name into the application form from 1000 yards... while on a Segway... One handed with his USP in .45ACP... While doing pushups AND eating his sandwich...

Lol... now that single frame makes me cringe.

I'm very likely going to be getting my hands on a HoloLens soon actually. I have another 5 days or so to buy one.

Any more thoughts on the Vive?

So Mister X, after having the Vive for at least a week now what can you say about it? It would be nice to know what your long term usage of it has been. Understandably there are not too many games that can grab 40 odd hours of gameplay that are fully compatible with the Vive, it would be good to know how you feel about it now.

    Re: The Vive

Well, I'm still loving it. but you are right. Other than a couple of pre-existing titles there are not a lot of full game experiences out there as yet. What there is are more akin to a bunch of, albeit impressive, tech demos. Very much like when the wii came out and market was flooded with glut of lack luster cash ins.

But, the applications for Vr in general way, way outstrip the wii by a country mile.
Take AltSpace for instance. Its sort of a Vr social chat thing. I was dubious at first but gave it a go to see what it was like, It kind of melts my mind a bit. You have an avatar and can wander about talking to groups of people like some far flung future person.
Is someone talking but you cant hear them well? Well let me lean a little closer and I can now totally hear them better , A very simple thing but when your avatar mimics this action its all totally natural and it just feels right.
Other people were gathering in groups to watch videos or live sporting events and chatting away. It was very impressive and immersive.

Some of the games though brilliant, Audio Shield, Space Pirate trainer, Holopoint and Hover Junkers for example, are amazing fun to play but tend to be in short ish burst as they can be exhausting. And there is nothing quite like a heated session, taking a break then putting on a cold soggy face hugger headset. I've ordered a VrCover to counter this but in the meantime ..eww)

As has been mentioned ad nauseam since Oculus brought Vr in to the mainstream, something with the scale of Skyrim would be amazing on the Vive, the combat play alone would be worth the price of admission.
There is an small RPG out now that demonstrates it, Vanishing Realms. Its RPG lite but it proves the principle that it could be done. even with its crude graphics.

In some ways its a golden time for Vr, No DLC no micro transactions. But then again not a lot of deep content.
Too early to tell If will go super big , but i certainly hope so.

Its something you can't describe you have to experience. The videos online of the games are like going out for dinner and eating a fine meal when you have no sense of smell. Its just missing a vital component.

Thats not to say its all perfect, The resolution is not amazing compared to current gaming standards. Txt can be difficult to read in some situations ( but usually because the developer didn't do things properly) It can be a bit of a pain if you have to move stuff around every time you want to play. And in some of the action games, Hover Junkers is particularly troublesome for this as you tend to spin around alot on the spot shooting wildly, the cord can get wrapped up in your legs.

But generation 1 issues aside its very exciting to use, If you get a chance to have a try do-it Its well worth it.
FuzzyLogik, Bojingles and Kage like this.
