For something completely different, I set up my SSH server on a nonstandard port and I haven't had a single attack yet. I'm sure Y2 would lambast me for leaving it this way. I tried using the Public/Private key thing, and I could even log in. But, it would terminate the connection immediately for some permissions problem I couldn't track down. So I went this route.
Did you know Windows Firewall can do port translation? I left my SSH server on the regular port, but set the windows firewall to go from X to 22. And X is the nonstandard port I have forwarded from my router
