I have a story to go along with this song.

A few years ago, around the time this tune was released I met a younger girl in the hospital that had been beaten and raped by her pimp, she was strung out on drugs and terrified of men, but for some reason I made her feel safe so she sat with me often and ate at the table with me for most meals. It happened to be winter. I can't hear this song without thinking of her and hoping she cleaned herself up and got away from that life. You could see the toll the drugs were taking on her even at her age, and yet still see a little of the girl beneath it all. I've met a few people over the years that leave memories like this, and it truly helps you appreciate your own lot in life and to not take things for granted, even the small stuff.

Hard to believe this album is 34 years old.

In that regard, I bought my parents David Gilmour's Live in Pompeii 4 disc vinyl album. I've listened to the shit out of this on youtube, so I figured I would give old rich bags his due.

After I made the purchase, I (mentally) expounded, to myself, the virtues of analog format music. I was just about to twist my arm to snobbishly pat myself on the back when I thought about the recording side. Does the music need to be recorded in analog for the vinyl pressing to even mean anything? Otherwise, how it is any different than a CD copy of a record? Did they record it in analog? I fucking doubt it. Probably wasted my money.

That's ok, though. My dad is a bit of an audiophile, and has old school theater speakers in his living room (Voice of the Theater!) that I'm sure he can use to either deafen himself or blow the tonearm clean off the turntable. That will only happen after 18 years of searching ebay for a new needle, though.

Most modern music is recorded digitally. It's not even remotely fair to compare it to the crap sound of a CD, since it's recorded at a very high bit-rate/sample-rate. CDs are 1970s technology refined and released in the early 1980s. Sample rates are horrible and the loss of information is huge. A sinewave looks like a chunky set of stairs. Oddly, there's plugins they use in some cases that simulate the analog noise in the background of an audio master recording tape. Some hipster musicians insist on using old analog recording equipment... wearing their wife beater t-shirt, wool scarf, fake glasses, and strange hats. They're on their way out. Digital is here to stay... and even though vinyl was gone and came back, don't expect analog recording to ever return to power. It just sucks that we haven't seen a viable alternative to the 1982 compact disk. The music you listen to on the radio, stream on Spotify, buy from the App Store... yeah, 99% is the same shitty rate of a CD. No idea why. The internet is fast. We can deal with lossless audio everywhere.

Also, you giving your dad Floyd-ish music... is that kinda like Dennis Mitchell giving his mom a catcher's mitt?

Yeah, you're right, I'm sure the master recording quality is so high that nothing is missed. Spot on you are. I feel better. The first record I can ever remember listening to was The Wall, on vinyl, complete with popping and hissing. I loved it. It made an impression. Probably also a little worrisome since I was 7 or 8
