Why I like big cars...

After work this evening while on my way to pick my son up from daycare a dumb woman in a Chevy Suburban 2500 rammed into the front, right quarter of my Ford Explorer.

I was making a left turn and had the green. I saw the lady across the intersection waiting to turn right. As I'm about 3/4 through the turn she just decides to go and plows right into me. Later she told the responding State Trooper that I "Came out of nowhere!" I believe her too, because she was yapping on her phone and looking the other way when she hit me! If she would have been paying attention she would have seen me. She also told the Trooper I ran the light.

Lucky for me this occurred at a brand new intersection with traffic cameras. FHP wrote the women a big fat ticket for improper right turn and cited her for causing the accident. I'm not hurt, the truck is another story. It drove fine all the way home and idled with the AC on the entire 2 hours I waited for FHP so mechanically things seem ok but I'll have to dig in tomorrow and see. From the outside it's clear I'll need a new right front fender, wheel & tire, front bumper & cover, head lamp, corner lamp, hood and everything that goes with that.

If I had been in some econobox fuel sipper I'm sure I'd be posting from a hospital bed right now. Her truck weighs in a 5,800 pounds and she was traveling roughly 40 mph. She hit me hard enough to toss my Explorer (weighing in at 4,600 lbs) out of my lane and into the concrete median which isn't an easy thing to do.

After I got home I was looking over the police report and noticed the woman's address; she lives one street down from me.

Cool that they somehow accessed the cameras so fast. Neat tech.

Yeah, I even told her there were cameras before FHP showed up. She got out of her truck, walked up to me and was flipping out about "How I came out of nowhere!" I was like, "uh huh, go wait by your car. FHP will sort this out." The Trooper didn't even ask us what happened initially, he took our info and said he would be back after he "looked at the light". He sat in his car a while, came back, asked me for my version (probably to confirm what he watched) and then handed the lady her ticket. It was great!

I'm trying to see the good in the bad. Back in 2005 I had the truck parked on the street and someone backed into it which required a new bumper cover and a respray of the hood. Well, in the last two months the paint has been peeling every so slightly on the hood and bumper cover. Now, I get it fixed for free!

Glad you all are ok Pale. I agree with you on the big cars 100% We got rear ended in my truck a couple months ago. It totaled the honda that rear ended us and we barely felt it. The only sign of the wreck was paint in the hitch reciever.

A friend's F250 was rear ended last year by a Honda Accord. He had the ball mount and ball in the receiver which took most of the impact. It literally split the front of the Accord in half. There was no damage to his truck and even the ball mount and ball looked ok.

In FL it's technically illegal to drive around with the ball mount and ball in place when you're not towing but folks do it anyway, myself included. Nice piece of added protection should some idiot decide to rear end you.

Actually a similar thing happened to my fathers Accord. A F250 decided that it didn't want to turn left so it backed up a bit and put a nice hole in the hood... and set off the airbags. D'oh.
