Oh yeah, has anyone done their taxes yet? I benefited from Trump Tax. The standard deduction was doubled, and I dropped 3% on my tax bracket.

Did 'em a while ago. I got about half as much back, but I made a lot more last year since we keep more in our checks... I think the tax cuts in general was a good 2.5X more than I got back in taxes last year. Have family that have done this professionally and have been trying to help people understand that they're much better off now when they start to complain about getting a smaller tax refund: "What, I though I was supposed to get waay more back!!? This tax change sucks!"- "Well, you made over $1000 more last year because of it, and you're still getting a refund, so yes, you got way more back" "oh...!..but... ah..."

    Morning all!

I owed less so I guess that is a good thing. The goal is to owe noting, get nothing back. I am getting closer.

So, I picked up a used HP/Keysight spectrum analyzer, audio spectrum. It's big, heavy, hard to move, and awesome. I got it for a pretty good deal because the seller's pictures made it look like it had a major problem (no trace). It was $14k new (albeit a number of years ago). But, after futzing with it, I got the trace show up. It's a dual channel deal, which is great, but the B channel has some kind of attenuation issue. I think it's usable, but something is unhappy in that part of it. For me, not a major concern now, since I just want to use it to evaluate the bread-board amplifiers I've been messing with, so one reliable channel is fine there.
And, this. Turns out the second channel was dead. I've spent the last several weeks in a diagnostic mode. Got the service manual, and had to order/make some card extenders to enable in-circuit testing. The first problem I found was what appeared to be a dead opto-isolator. Despite being designed in the late 70s, this thing features an all digital bus, so you can control the unit from another station, in addition to using the unit-mounted controls. They isolate these signals with optocouplers. I found a dead one. Got rid of it, soldered in a socket, and then ordered a couple of replacements. None of this would have been possible without the service manual being so excellent. After that, everything is working correctly. Quite an adventure for me, but one with a satisfying end. Something Robert Kraft knows a lot about.

Test amplifier (breadboard) plot. Pretty good response. Drops off before I want it to, but that should be tunable. 0-25khz
