Rate DVD movies - standard or hd

I'm not sure if this is worth a thread since the HD versions are as good or better then standard DVD, but ...

I normally look on highdefdigest.com for HD movie reviews once they hit DVD. I have found their reviews to be a bit wonky sometimes with trying to determine if I should pay less and get the standard DVD version or go with the HD version. I realize there are going to be people who go HD all the time, but with renting some HD DVD's I've found that the quality doesn't justify spending the extra $$$.

It might be worth starting a thread to quickly rate HD movies and say if they are worth a purchase over standard DVD, or if the quality was poor and buying the HD versions isn't that big a deal. Most of the ones I've seen I haven't gotten to watch the standard versions, so I can only comment on if the HD versions was a letdown or not.

Here are a few I've rented or owned and can comment on:

***

Transformers - HD-DVD: This was well worth the purchase I thought. Some of the film transfer scenes is meh, but the CGI is top notch. To date one of the best HD transfers I've watched.

28 Weeks Later - Blu-Ray: I thought the video quality was a total letdown. I think when I pick this up I'm going to get the standard DVD version.

300 - HD-DVD / Blu-Ray: Both formats look the same I thought. From watching the non-HD extra's, you can totally tell the HD video of the movie looks a lot better. I recommend this as a buy.

Serenity - HD-DVD: The HD version looks really good. Definitely better then standard DVD. I'll probably replace my standard version at some point.

Batman Begins - HD-DVD: I rented the HD version and I didn't think it was leaps ahead of the standard DVD. I'm happy with the standard version and won't be replacing this one.

The Road Warrior - HD-DVD: I was impressed with how good they did with the HD version. This is one I'll buy at some point.

Army of Darkness - HD-DVD: meh, I will just stick with my standard version of this. The change wasn't good enough to justify buying a more expensive version.

Hostel Part II - Blu-Ray: I thought this HD version looked really good. The reviewer at highdefdigest reviewed it poorly, but I think he's wrong. I'm glad I bought the HD version.

Disturbia - Blu-Ray: It looked good in HD. Not really anything bad to say about the transfer. I'd probably buy the HD version if I bought the movie.

iceman loves playing with their D-key!
I've taken a bid in the format wars by going with HD, why? Simple. HD has a new format that is going to hit mass-production, and BestBuy/Futureshop/Walmart shelves within the near future. This new format has more capacity than the Blue-Ray disc with a massive 51GB of space. Now this may be only 1GB more than Blue-Ray's 50GB, but I think it's a great thing for HD since it's not as expensive to produce as Blue-Ray is, thus resulting in cheaper HD DVD's within the future.

I'm in extreme anticipation for Saving Private Ryan to make its leap from standard DVD format to HD, or BlueRay formats.

But in all honesty towards the new "high-tech" wave of movie watching, and sound listening etc...I'm just not really comfortable with spending $40 for a single movie just yet.

so the only reason you're choosing the other format is for a mere 1Gb of space?
