    Amazon Cloud Player

We've previously talked about services such as Pandora, Grooveshark, Rdio and Spotify, but the new Amazon Cloud Player looks to have beaten both Apple and Google to the punch when it comes to the next generation of cloud-based music and storage solutions.

Existing Amazon customers in the US can now upload their MP3 purchases to their 5GB cloud space -- upgradable to a one-year 20GB plan for free upon purchasing an MP3 album, with additional plans starting at $20 a year -- and then start streaming on their computers or Android devices. Oh, and did we mention that this service is free of charge as well?

with cell carriers ridding themselves of their unlimited data plans, this may not help much for phones, and you can avoid cell charges by just syncing up your tracks instead of uploading them to Amazon, then streaming them.

    nice option to have, though.

yeah, I thought about that, in an ever-increasing world of data caps for both home and mobile, the future of this type of service will probably be difficult...I still think it's the way forward, but it's not a slam dunk by any means...

I'm torn between trying to go full-on cloud with a service such as this, or more of a home-based cloud with the traditional transfer of data to my mobile devices...

with caps, home cloud will become the choice for consumers, while business will go full cloud.

easy to see a bi-cloud approach in the interim. no, Tao, that isn't a cloud that goes both ways.

I was reading something about Amazon forgoing the approval of the major music companies, and opening themselves to possible lawsuits.

I did as well, but Amazon has got to have looked at the legal side, and they have the money to back up their lawyers. Not to mention how many sales the music companies would lose if they cut Amazon off.

Just be careful of what you put on there. "You give us the right to access, retain, use and disclose your account information and Your Files" there's a similar clause in dropbox's TOS as well.

I've been using GrooveShark for over 6 months now. I haven't paid for music since. I'll keep using til this music industry tries to bring down the ban hammer.
