Question

So im still trying to get xbox live set up...and i would like to do it the cheapest way possible...and i was wondering, instead of a router could i use a switch, seems like it would work, what do u guys think.

From the little I've learned in my networking class, I believe a switch will work standalone, depending on what you want to do with it. If you can, I would suggest buying a cheap router. If you're already behind a router, then go ahead and use the switch. Also, I know Linksys routers will automatically become a switch when you plugin an uplink cable into the first port without connecting to the WAN/Internet slot.

Best way would to be buy a router. A switch might work but I do not think it will. (not 100% sure) But routers aren't that much these days like 50 dollars or so

ya...im going to get a router, just thought it might be cheaper to get a switch...considering you can pick one up for like 10 bucks nowadays

You would want to get a router unless it will be the only device you are connecting to your internet connection.

If you want to share your internet connection between a 360 and a PC then you want a router to assign IP addresses to the devices on your network.

Watch the sales as you can find a low end 4 port Router/Switch between $30 to $50 dollars.

Linksys and D-link products are pretty good.

I might get xbox 360, and therefore xbox live, so im wondering if a router would slow down my internet if I was be running xbox live and using the same connection on the computer at the same time.

It shouddnt. Im on a router with 5mb dsl with a 360 and 2 other comps hooked up and I dont notice any slowdown on any device. You'll be happy when you do get a 360 its a great time to game on consoles no matter your choice of console.
