Not one failure here. I run it for a good 3 hours a day (or every other day). I take precautionary measures, though. I keep it upright for better airflow. It's not around any other heat source. It's in the open so air can flow freely over it. I start it up and let it warm up at the dashboard before I play a game, and when I quit a game, I let it cool down at the dashboard before shutting it off. This helps prevents the rapid heating up and cooling down that can warp the board.

If you sit there and play it for 12 hours a day, every day, with it kept in some holed up shelf by the TV, then yeah, you're going to get a RRoD.

Microsoft extended the warranty from 1 year to 3 years.

The only way you wouldn't be able to have it replaced is if you broke the under the front panel.

how does standing it up increase airflow? the biggest vent is on the bottom? just wondering because i have been told to set it both ways and i dont know which is better

Heat rises. Standing it upright allows the hot air to flow to the top and leave. If you set it sideways, the air can get stuck in the flat area before it's finally pushed out the sides.

Also, when you stand the console up, there is greater airflow that will come in contact with the case itself.

~|~ <-- Air hits it a lot.

~_~ <-- Air may hit it, but a lot will just go over top of it.

If you really want to improve airflow, stand it upright, and find something that's hollow and place the 360 on top of it. This opens the vents at the bottom to take in cold air. There are also two vents on both sides of the 360 at the top and bottom. This is good for cold air in at the bottom and hot air out at the top. And since cold air stays low and hot air goes to the top, it gives you plenty of better cooling than just laying it flat.

A lot of stuff I said was repeated multiple times. It's late and I don't feel like restructuring it to make more sense.
