The Xbox One, One S and One X Thread

We have a thread for the PS4 , Might as well have one for the Xbox1 announced yesterday. Details Stolen from Gizmodo

    The Xbox Launch, Compressed

Were you doing something fun yesterday evening? Good on ya. We were stuck watching the launch of the new Xbox, which went on a bit. Handily, we’ve boiled down the essential details into an executive summary, with minimal opinion or bullshit. We’ve even turned off the cutting sarcasm.

    The Basics
There’s a new Xbox, and it’s called the One. It looks like an old VHS player. Every One comes with a new Kinect, and you’ll need said Kinect for it to work. The controller is basically the same. Inside, the hardware is an 8-core CPU, 8GB of RAM, 500GB non-removable harddrive, Blu-ray drive (!), and Wi-Fi.
You turn it on by saying “Xbox On”, and it resumes whatever you were doing last. A sleep mode, for consoles. Oh, and it recognises individual users. The Kinect does the recognising, and it’s been completely redesigned. It does the same stuff as before, but now it’s super-accurate (and 1080p). It works in the dark and can pick up your heartbeat, which is kinda awesome.

    Some TV Stuff
There’s TV integration. You plug your existing set-top box in, and then you can control TV channels with voice control. That saves switching inputs on your TV. The TV stuff will also leverage Xbox Live to give you recommendations, because injecting social media into stuff is good apparently.
You can also have the TV or movie take up 2/3rds of the screen, with an app like Skype ‘snapped’ to the side like in Windows 8. Oh yeah, there’s Skype integration. Wow. More usefully, you can snap game walkthroughs or IMDB while doing the main thing on the big screen. Nifty. Also on the social side, Surface Glass gets a tonne of new upgrades.

    Some Internet-Connected Stuff
On the gaming social perspective front, there’s now increased ability to share clips of your awesome gameplay, improved matchmaking, and more geographical reach for said matchmaking. The One will not require an internet connection to play single-player games, with the exception of games that are programmed to use Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, Azure, to do some of the heavy processing for the game on the server (thus saving power on the machine itself). Finally, Xbox Live is getting a massive overhaul as well. It currently runs on 15,000 servers, but it’s going to go to 300,000 this year. Insane. You’ll be able to access your movies, music, games, and saves from anywhere.

    Ooh, Games!
Ok, so the nitty-gritty: gaming. EA have debuted a new game engine, EA Sports Live. It makes stuff a bit more realistic, like most new game engines. FIFA 14, Madden and UFC are all coming to the Xbox, with some features (like FIFA’s Ultimate Team mode) exclusive to the One. Of course, there are exclusive games from Microsoft Studios — a promised 15 new titles in the first year. We saw a Max Payne one, which looked pretty neat (but pre-rendered footage always does). Call of Duty will also be on the One, and as always, DLC will be available there first. We also got a look at the previously-announced new CoD, Call of Duty Ghosts. The graphics look great as ever, but more importantly you get your very own pet war dog.
The HALO news wasn’t a new game, but rather a ‘premium’ HALO TV series directed by Stephen Spielberg. So, y’know. Holy crap.

    Price and Release
The really important stuff, price and release, was left ’till E3, but it’ll almost certainly be out late this year. You can pre-order the pre-order now if you’re that desperate.

All in all I'd say a pretty good reveal, I think the unit itself is a little on the dull side design wise, but I guess you spend more time looking at the TV its attached to than the thing itself.

I think design wise its more than dull... It's lame... And so is its name... It's not the 1st xbox... I'm not sure what kind of idiot tried to go down the EV1 route, but that hippy needs to be fired.

Beyond those two points... I think what's going on with consoles right now is really interesting.

I heard that they will be doing activation codes for games to try and control the used game market. Is this true?

they're certainly trying to get it to be the best media player/htpc kinda thing which is pretty cool. I mean. i play with my PS3... but it still is my main media player (90% of the time). but for others i'm sure it's going to be their main gaming rig... of which i guess we'll all get to wait to see the big difference's between the PS4, One and the Wii U (L O L). The big thing though, with the "one" will be the live accounts. does it still cost money? how much? Do you have to have an account in order to do anything that you're already paying for? like Netflix? Hulu plus? what about free stuff like Crackle (does it even have access to it?) The box itself looks simple - which isn't too bad if you like to have stuff matching your other home theater stuff but it does remind me of a checkered-board. and yeah. "one" as the name? I know it's for "all-in-one" but in that case I'd rather call it a "MFC" or something like that (for Multi-Function Console) - all-in-one are the throw away crap "MFP's" (multi-function printers) that you grab at target. not sure what they're thinking when they named it and i'm sure it'll confuse the heck out of people who don't know any better. (Abbott and Costello come to mind) "which xbox do you want for your birthday?" "the ONE!" "so just an xbox?" "no, the Xbox One!" "*sigh* okay okay! I'll see if i can find one!" *buys the original xbox at a garage sale for a few bucks*

I'm seeing the XB1 and the PS4 being mechanically very similar, with possibly the PS4 having a slight graphics edge... but both have 8-core X86 AMDs, AMD grapphics, 8gb RAM, Blu-ray, yada yada yada. Both are pushing add-on services like Skype, Netflix, etc. I predict the winner will be whoever has the least glitches. Toss a coin.

    Re: The Forthcoming Xbox1

With the Xbox One controlling your TV and obviously recording your TV viewing habits there could be some interesting buy-ins for advertisers who want to market stuff to gamers. Just a thought as we all know gamers spend a lot of money, we are a pretty big bulls-eye for advertisers.

I sort of like the grips on the analog sticks on with new controller, and I love how storage added via USB is just storage it will work the same way as the internal hard drive. Looks like 3 USB ports with one dedicated for the Kinect.

lmao - i'm always curious about tv shows or movies or what not accidentally activating something that's... well... speech activated. would by mildly funny (until it happens to you) to never manage to finish a specific movie because half-way through it the system keeps thinking you're telling it to turn off.

Apparently It can tell if you are looking at it, or "engaged" as they put it. So it can ignore commands unless you are looking towards it i.e will ignore background talk.

Amusingly, people watching the livestream had viewing interrupted every time the dude on screen voiced a Kinect command as existing Kinect's hear "Xbox.." and tried to comply
