| | | From the ashes of Marvel Universe Online I'm about a week late on this news, but as it hasn't been mentioned here yet... Cyptic studios, developers of the superhero MMO City of Heroes, have recently launched the official site for Champions Online.
When Microsoft and Marvel comics pulled the plug on the intended release of their superhero MMO (intended for the PC and 360 market), Cryptic went on with development and purchased the rights to Champions, a superhero PnP roleplaying game. I personally never heard of it, but it apparently has a following using the HERO system.
The most interesting items of note so far are that cell shading is the being used for world and character design and that they are calling this the "first true action MMORPG."
A trailer has already been done. The folks at Cryptic are aiming for a spring 2009 release. So keep your eyes peeled Champions and superhero fans alike, they are promising big things.

| | | One of the things I didn't mention in the post was that they plan on making all powers available to everyone, so you can make your hero into whatever. You also make your own arch-villain, whom you'll have to face through the game. It sounds interesting.
I'm not a huge fan of cell shading graphics, but if the game play is fun, I'll be on board, as well as others from Jagged Legion.

: 44 th | | | It kind of angers me that they both pulled the plug. If they can make it just as good, even better than City of Heroes, I'll be all over it.
Ha, the trailer has a bunch of sounds from CoH in it.

| | | my only hope is that they dont have a retarded online fee for the pc game. i really wanted to play City of Heroes but no one game is ever worth paying online fees for. at least with Xbox you pay the online for any game you want. but WoW and City of Heroes just push me away with that.

| | | Well, Jack Emmitt, head of Cryptic is a big supporter of the monthly fee thing without paying for additional content. So it's highly likely that it will be that type of payment plan.

| | | If you can make your own superhero and it has good gameplay I'll probably be in it, cell shading doesn't bother me much, I like it. |

: 44 th | | | Lawl, his name is Defender. It seems to reek of City of Heroes a little too much... I know it's Cryptic, but c'mon!

| | | I'm not up on the world of Champions, but they have their own established mythos and, from what I understand, Defender is a long established hero name in that universe. They aren't really ripping off the CoH name, but yeah, it's a funny coincidence.
