Nintendo DS Online Gaming

Here is an article I found on IGN.com about the online capabilities for the NDS.

GDC 2005: DS Goes Online
Iwata reveals the plan to connect players to the net, including the "killer app" we've all been waiting for.
by Craig Harris
March 10, 2005 - At the Game Developers Conference keynote speech today, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that Nintendo will be sending its Nintendo DS online wirelessly to enable gamers around the world to connect to each other in games written specifically for the protocol.

Once the service begins later this year, Nintendo DS users will be able to connect to the service wirelessly at universal Wi-Fi hot spots in use all over the world. Nintendo's in-house development team is already creating Animal Crossing DS to support global Wi-Fi connectivity.

During the speech, Iwata took part in eight-player wireless competition of Mario Kart DS with audience members to demonstrate the local-area wireless support already inherent in several Nintendo DS games. More details on the Wi-Fi service will be revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this May.

Iwata also used his keynote speech today to reveal that shipments of DS systems have surpassed four million units in North America and in Japan in the 16 weeks on the market. That number will approach six million when the system launches in Europe this March.

During the speech, Iwata demonstrated two key Nintendo DS games to spotlight the unique gameplay aspects and non-traditional gaming of the dual screen handheld. Nintendogs was highlighted to demonstrate the voice and touch controls of interacting with realistic puppies on-screen. Electroplankton also made its debut to show the innovative use of the DS' control properties. According to Iwata: "This is designed to produce harmony, not adrenaline."

still waiting to see how the DS "revolutionizes" handheld gaming and a reason to drop 150 on this... seems like i'm gonna wait whatever the big N is going to release later this year, hopefully something close to the level the PSP is bringing to the table... I love Nintendo, but i'm sick of the poor graphics on a handheld they've been having for years, hope this competition makes the handheld market as promising as the home console market looks like it will be in the next gen...

PSP RULEZ!!!

This is really sad. The DS has been out in the U.S. for 4 months with no online Wifi games. The PSP will launch on 24 March with 5 online Wifi games. How long is it going to take Nintendo to realize what the modern gamer wants?
They keep talking about "later this year"
That's when i'll think about buying a DS.
In the mean time, i've been playing my PSP since Dec. 20 and loving it (chomping at the bit to get the U.S. launch games and Bleach)

In my eyes the only thing the DS has on the PSP is battery life. But meh I'm going to be around power outlets often enough that this shouldn't be a problem.

And yeah can't wait for Bleach. I just wish I could get my hands on it with out have to wait 2-4 weeks after it's release or droping 20 in shipping fees.

I have the DS and it's a pretty big disappointment. It's been out for a little while now and there really are NO GOOD games. And the graphics are far inferior to the PSP's

Nintendo takes waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy toooooooooooooo looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg

I have a DS and it would be nice to own another game other than Mario 64 DS which isn't even an original. The GameCube sucked as well.
