| | | I'm disappointed in Thompson. He's my guy and he has a great view on where we are and where we need to go and how to do it, but he's not really getting his platform out there. He needs to step up his game.

"Who's giving the briefing?"
"You are."

| | | Can you guys explain your rationale for choosing to back who you've chosen? Simply taking a side doesn't really accomplish anything productive. Once a few others have supplied rationale for their choices (DennyCrane, FuzzyLogik for Thompson, chode messiah for whoever, etc.), I'll supply my choice and my rationale.

| | | conservatives are best. republicans are best if you don't enjoy getting the crap taxed out of you.
this immediately cuts my choices to conservative republicans.
From here, I look at who fits or comes close to that, and begin character judging.
Thompson is solid, but as DC said he has trouble getting his message out. I'd like for him to be president because his ideals wouldn't leave our country in danger (as some dem's would). He's hardcore defense and understands how tax cuts stimulate the economy.
Rudy also has some interesting ideas, but he's a bit more liberal than Thompson. And he's a weird guy. so that places him down the ladder.

| | | I'm backing Fred Thompson because he's the epitome of conservatism. He's a firm believer in the Constitution being the guiding light of our nation. He believes in limited federal government with (as the Constitution says) powers not defined as belonging to the federal government belonging to the state and it's citizens. This means supporting the seperation of powers between the 3 branches (Judges not trying to make law, but interpreting law based on the Constitution, The President being Commander in Chief of the military, etc). It means reducing the size of the government which in turn reduces our taxes. Be believes that the American people are better able to spend their own money than the government. He believes in a strong national defense that can protect our interests at home and abroad. He believes in American Exceptionalism- that we ARE a great nation and we became great because of the freedom guarenteed in the Constitution. He believes in the free market system. That competition benefits business and consumers. That the economy thrives best with as little government involvement as possible.
And because of all this, I believe in Fred Thompson.

A true conservative does not need to nail himself to the planks of the party platform, nor do they need to conform to a certain subset of beliefs. The party is not always right.
I find it hard to believe that anyone buys into the party line wholly and completely. I'm very conservative on spending, federal power, government programs, taxes, and military. I'm more liberal on social issues, and though I would prefer as little government as possible, there are ramifications to excluding the government from all aspects of life.
What I'd really like is to see the States regain their power, with a larger chunk of taxation going towards state programs than federal, a federal downsizing, flat tax or usage tax with the abolishment of the IRS, border enforcement, term limits, strong defense, small business incentives, etc.
The States should be providing social programs, not the federal government. States have a much better hold on budgeting and spending, and don't have the leeway to overspend as much as their federal counterparts. States can more easily investigate fraud, dispense real care as opposed to free money, and encourage local help from charities and churches - people here are generous and will help locally.
There's a point to our name - the United States. We weren't united to create a large overpowering federal government. We were always intended to be different. We were united to avoid conflict between States on certain issues, and to share the burden of defense, for instance.
Anyway, I like Thompson, I like Romney, and I like Giuliani. I think Rudy has the best chance to win, and I don't believe he'll do anything drastic like appoint liberal judges or confiscate guns, he's a lot smarter than that.
I want a more middle-road candidate, not a far right one. Resurrecting Ronald Reagan won't fix the country, it's not the same place it was in 1980. I know, I was there.
A combined ticket with Rudy and one of the more conservative guys as VP would be ideal for me.
