Just in case if you are ever in a survival situation, you don't have a compass, and it is night time... here is a good way to find Polaris, the North Star.
The larger constellation, Ursa Major, commonly known as the Big Dipper, has two stars that point to Polaris. These are nicknamed the Pointer Stars. See picture.
Keep in mind ... the stars in Ursa Minor are dimmer than those in Ursa Major, so you need to be in a fairly dark location with little light pollution to make out the shape, though Polaris is a moderately bright star.. just look for it.
