I'm constantly switching between Seagate and Western Digital drives. I've had more WD drives go bad than Seagate drives. I always used WD drives in the past. Currently all of my drives are Seagate drives and within the past 5-6 years I haven't had a single Seagate drive that I own go bad, including the 1TB drives. In that same 5-6 years, I've had 2 WD drives go bad.

This recent mess with the 1TB (and other) drives from Seagate, and the way they handled it, has really made me cautious. But really, I don't think anyone can know whether a drive will last or not. It may just be the position of the Earth to the Moon and Sun when a certain batch of drives were made that are all doomed to fail.

I currently have one of the WD portables drive. I like it so far. Although i returned the glossy black for the one that matches my mac when i had the chance at a better deal. I'm still happy though. It works great, maybe a little slow.

After some investigation, the only drive I've had forever that has never failed is a Samsung.

I used WD drives exclusively for years... I had tons of them fail..

When i switched exclusively to Seagate the failure rate has dropped... I currently have 11 Seagate drives that i go between (4x750GB, 4x320GB, 2x250GB, 1x500GB) and to date i have only had one of the 250GB drives fail,.

Avoid Hitachi/IBM... WD is not too bad, but every drive i have had from them has failed inside of 2 years...

I have had the best luck with seagate.. less so with WD, although I am running two of them in a Raid 1 at the moment.
