Decline in Facebook users in the U.S?

5 Possible Reasons U.S. Users Are Ditching Facebook | PCWorld

I was reading that article in PCWorld today, and while I believe the reason's #1 & #5 are less than imaginative and probably wrong... It occurred to me that reasons #2-4 are totally valid.

#2 - The Privacy Issues Keep Getting Worse
Let's face it, there's not much that I need to say here. We all know about and have read the news reports of how many different privacy issues exist with Facebook.

In fact, It's so bad that I have regularly run across company's that specifically prohibit Facebook/Other Social Media site's usage by certain high value employee's. Why? Legitimate kidnapping concerns... ---Especially in Arizona & California which both have issues with kidnappings & targeted home invasions. Granted, Arizona is becoming the kidnapping capital of the United States and in most cases I've seen it's company's in AZ who are starting to have concerns.
#3 - Facebook has Become too Much of a Business
Nearly every business in the world, even those without websites, are more commonly using Facebook to reach customers. While this type of marketing is and has been very effective, perhaps this decline of U.S. Facebook users is a sign that user's are beginning to lose interest because of the presence of business.

One could argue that the combination of the increase in businesses on MySpace & the increase in popularity of Facebook resulted in the "Social Media Scene" that we see today.

If this is the case, the time is now to begin to pay attention to future numbers in Facebook users. Perhaps that the decline will only be with U.S. Users over the next 2-3 years... Heck, maybe in the long run there will be no significant change. Either way, it's time for people in Marketing, Web Development, and other related fields to really pay attention.
#4 - Facebook is too General; We Want Specified Social Networks
Could this be true? Do we want to use, say, a half a dozen different social networks? Do we want specific social networks for different things?

Perhaps that idea can hold some water. LinkedIn is an example of that... LinkedIn is a website used by professionals around the world to stay networked. Why dont they use Facebook instead? Well, because of the way LinkedIn is specifically targeted:

    1. It says more professional. ---Do you really want people at work or a client seeing your friends pictures on Facebook about how drunk you all were last night? Do you want them to see more personal messages you post? Do you want them knowing who you're friends & acquaintances are?
    2. It's specifically targeted for a specific use. ---While this is kind of related to the previous reason... There is not a bunch of useless crap on there about cats, funny pictures, drunk people, or stupid things your friends are doing.

I mean look... No offense, but I tend to like to keep things separate (I.E., I don't want idiots being associated with me). When your work & personal life tends to blend together, you start to have problems.
I find this all very interesting to be honest... We see time and time again that the way Social Media sites are used seem to change with the evolution of the internet.

I think it's the privacy aspect mostly. Coming from a security standpoint at least and it's not always Facebook's fault. Many people don't realize that them saying certain things on Facebook can leave them as a target for a multitude of things. People post that their away for 3 weeks on vacation and their home gets broken in to. People post that they're home alone and they get raped. People that are your friends on Facebook might not actually be your friend.

did you really just ask if Bo has his cwp?

he shot his name into the application form from 1000 yards... while on a Segway... One handed with his USP in .45ACP... While doing pushups AND eating his sandwich...

That's true... I got to know a young woman about a year ago who had a very similar story relating to a social media site and something that had happened to her when she was in Southern California. (Home Invasion/Robbery while at home)

Re: Decline in Facebook users in the U.S?

I'm sure a lot of it is due to the privacy aspects. 2 and 3 also tie together pretty good because of the way the ads work. A pretty simple way to demonstrate that is to change your relationship status, or mention a product in your wall posts.

BTW, thanks for the info on the "opt-OUT" facial recognition deal. There aren't any of me tagged, and I don't want to have any. Like the article mentions, if Google finds it creepy, it's creepy. Google still has their facial identifying software, but they're currently using it to blur faces on the streetview.

Re: Decline in Facebook users in the U.S?

i think there are lots of things going on here, along with the valid reasons listed:

    a. lots of people sign up for FB but never use it. I'm guessing 10s of millions.

    b. lots of people are just tired of it. you can only see so many "i'm drunk" and "my kids are this" and "you should try this juice drink I'm marketing just to my friends" and "I has a new cow in farmville". Even though you can block a lot of this, some you can't.

    c. while I don't think that many people are 'moving' to other social networks (LinkedIn sucks), I think services like twitter and foursquare and other 'lesser' networks are doing well.

    d. people are stupid

I give out all and as much information as possible. What are they going to do with it? Make my life easier by advertising something I'm actually interested in?
