UK, April 3, 2008 - It may have taken more than a little time for Polyphony to warm to the idea, but Gran Turismo head Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that the series is finally going to be implementing damage, saying it could be included as a downloadable feature for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue as early as this Autumn.

| | Nice! But I've already seen posts on other forums about people wanting customizable soundtracks and paint jobs now. No matter what they put in people always want more... I was always happy with the physics, but not so much the AI. I could care less about paint or damage, but whatever makes Yamauchi happy I guess.

| | | i could care less about paint or soundtracks, but racing games that don't have vehicle damage always seemed lame to me. sure the cars look awesome driving, but when you slam into a wall at 130, how can they make you bounce off it as if nothing happened?

| | | Why havent this been in the game before?? I always thought it was a give-in to have damage in 'realistic' racing games, or race sims.

| | | Being one who has owned all the Gran Turismo series, the problem was not the damage, It was the AI of the computer cars on the track. It sucked balls. The actual dynamics of the cars was always superior to any other racing game out there. That's why some car magazines used Gran Turismo to test out some cars before they got a chance to drive them. Plus, why are you going into walls at 130 in the first place? Isn't that what you aren't supposed to be doing in racing games?

| Because the car manufacturers don't want to see their cars damaged in a game. They always disallowed it before. It seems they still disapprove of it, which is why the damage modeling that's currently in games is not realistic, either. Other than breaking off a bumper or scratching up the paint, there's no real model damage taking place. Slam into a wall going 130mph in Forza 2, and you crumple the hood a little (10-15mph crash could do this), break the bumper off, and break the glass on your windows. In real life, if you slam into a wall going 130mph, there's not going to be too much left of the vehicle. As for the damage affecting a vehicles performance, that should have been implemented awhile ago, but really that's not what the game is about. It's always been about the driving experience, not "Let's hit this wall and see what happens to the car." Even the damage in Forza 2 is very unrealistic. Hit a wall going 30mph and you do some minor damage to your brakes. If you hit a wall going 30mph in your own car, you're not going anywhere after that, so the brakes are the least of your worries.
To me, this is kind of neat and kind of lame at the same time. They're answering to their customers' pleas. This isn't always a good thing since people are stupid and request a lot of stupid stuff. If they do add it, I would like to see it be realistic. I play racing games to race and have some good competition. Whether there is damage or not will not affect my purchase.
