Nega-review: Grand Theft Auto IV

Quote:
"GTA IV has its flaws as a game." (1) "The flow of the game basically goes like this: you watch a cutscene, someone in the cutscene says that someone has done them wrong, you're told they need to be taught a lesson, and then you get in a car and go teach them the lesson. At that point another cinema is triggered and the process repeats. ... it can definitely become a little repetitive." (2)

"It's not like previous GTAs, or most other sequels, where there are new stand-out features that you can easily discuss and rate." (4) "GTA IV [actually] reduces the amount of activities when compared to the previous game, San Andreas. You cannot go the gym to beef up Niko's muscles. And eating a ton of cheeseburgers won't turn you into a massive, wobbly mound of lard." (3)

"You'll probably be surprised to hear GTA IV has noticeably fewer weapons and vehicles on offer than GTA: San Andreas did. ... Yes, this means San Andreas' more unusual vehicles like fighter jets, hovercraft, go-karts and jetpacks are all absent. Don't expect to be wielding chainguns, flamethrowers or chainsaws either." (4) "The world itself is smaller than the state-sized San Andreas" (7) and in general the game has "a feature list that's a step back from its predecessors." (4)
Looking at a game with a near perfect score, this review is a bit nitpicky, but has some valid points.

Maybe I'm the only one who didn't really like San Andreas as much as the other GTA games. My list goes in order: 3, Vice city, then San Andreas last.

San Andreas was my least favorite as well. Vice City is my top, the game play was great, the music was great and the cast was great.

I didn't much care for doing all that in San Andreas anyways. I just wanna go out there and play the game without worrying about my body, sex appeal, and having to go to the gym constantly. It was cool to learn new fight moves though.

Yeah, who cares about the features in SA. It was the worst one of them all.

My list in order goes:
* Vice City (Only because Scarface is my favorite movie and this game was identical)
* IV
* Liberty City Stories
* III
* Vice City Stories
* 2
* 1969
* 1
* San Andreas

digitalbump.com | Grand Theft Auto 4 = “X” Rating?

I disagree with all this talk of explicit content.

Sure, you can kill people, but it's not explicit. You don't see gibs flying everywhere. Shoot someone in the head and you see a little misty cloud of blood, and when they fall down, a pool of blood forms on the ground. You're not watch half his head get removed with chunks flying and sticking to the wall or anything.

Explicit sex scenes? What? If you get with a girl and take her to her room, it shows an outside view of the house with some hilarious talk that only lasts about 5 seconds. If you pick up a hooker, sure you see the car bounce up and down, but you don't see any nudity or anything.

I don't understand what all this censorship of nudity is about, really. We have no problem showing all kinds of violence on regular cable TV. We see everything from people dying, guns being shot, to even gory scenes. They had Species 3 playing on TV the other day, and there's a scene towards the end where one of the aliens kills a guy in a restroom. When his buddy goes to check on him, it shows the guy sitting down with a giant hole in his head with the camera looking through the hole. Murder and violence are both quite illegal. However, with all this violence going on, we can't even see a pair of tits on TV. Tits and sex are legal with certain stipulations. They are also very natural and a part of everyones' lives. So why do we censor the natural, legal stuff, but show all the violence and illegal stuff?

Anyway, sure this game has violence and girls, but there's nothing explicit. I think the M+ rating is perfectly fine for it.

I bet the guy who wrote that article hasn't even played the game. All he did was watch that video.

Gantua pwns without cheats!
I will agree with the review that the game is pretty cut and dried play wise doesn't require any imagination to complete the missions(so far as I have played anyway)
