R.I.P. Sony Trinitron CRT

I didn't think this was major news, but here it is. After 40 years Sony is finally retiring the Trinitron. Most likely everyone here who has had a CRT has had a Trinitron. Currently I have a spare official Sony 15" CRT and my main monitor is a 21" Dell P1130 (rebranded Trinitron).

In fact, Sony already ended the production of CRTs in Japan around 2004 but continued to manufacture CRT TVs under the Trinitron brand at plants in Southeast Asia to meet limited demand in Latin America and parts of Asia. Since its introduction in 1968 Sony has shipped 280 million units including TV and Monitor tubes. The history and technology will end by the end of this month and the company will give its full attention on LCD and OLED flat panels.

wow - those things were good tv's too. I think I still have a 19" or a 21" trinitron monitor in my basement.

Maybe doing that they'll be able to further bring down the cost of the flat-panels!

Had a 20" trinitron for the longest until I upped it to a 1080p tv (huge difference).

Sony's too concerned with OLED's to worry about the cumbersome CRT anymore.
