Encryption Chip Could Squash PC Pirating Forever

Reports just a few days ago are claiming that there's some fancy new technology being installed on PC mainboards that will help thwart game piracy. In case you didn't know, this is good news for those of us that would like to be playing PC games up until they day they nail our coffin shut.

Quote:
"There is a stealth encryption chip called a TPM that is going on the motherboards of most of the computers that are coming out now," explained Bushnell, according to a GamesIndustry report.

"What that says is that in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world--which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords--which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem."

Piracy has been a hot-button issue in the PC gaming industry for some time now, with renowned PC developers such as Crytek, id, and Epic claiming that the high rate of pirated PC software forced them to put games on other platforms.
I am sure there will be some human rights nutjob that will get this shut down pretty quick. But hey, gotta keep the faith!

I give it a week max. Lets look at the TPM module, it was supposed to protect Mac OSX from being used on any PC. But it was hacked.

Hows this gonna be any different?

Not only that, but this will totally identify you. People are going to like that least of all. Not to mention no matter what technology or approach they use, it will always fall victim to modification (breakage) at somepoint. How long did it take to break the BluRay implementation, 3 days? obviously that's an entirely different thing, but it shows just how poorly these things are done sometimes. I never heard anything about this; nor about any contests encouraging people to break it before it was finalized. fail

How about we simply execute people caught with pirated software, music, and movies? Problem solved.

If it can be assembled by humans, it can be disassembled by humans.

Plus, it will never catch on. There's too much cooperation involved there.
