AMD launches external graphics box

Quote:
Fujitsu Siemens (FSC) was on hand to demo the concept with its Amilo GraphicBooster, an AppleTV-like unit with an AMD ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU built in and hooked up to 512MB of GDDR 3 memory. The box can drive four displays simultaneously, the company claimed.

AMD's XGP reference box: it's a graphics card, don't you know

Unfortunately, I see what they did there. Too bad it needs a proprietary connector.

that's nuts, four displays. That "thing" is pretty nice though, it'll work well in a business environment, I don't really see it getting big on regular consumers.

If it's like adding another GPU to your rig without SLi and works like SLi then maybe it'll be poppin. That'd actually be pretty cool if it were affordable, solves problems for people who can't upgrade yet.

I think it would change the market on gaming notebooks...

Alot of people like sub notebooks and prefer them over 17" DTR's. But the downside to most of them are the graphics area. My M1330 only has a 256mb 8400 MT. Sure that will run CS source at 1280 x 800 on my laptop screen just fine, but at 1920 x 1200 on my LG 24" it is by far "playable". I'm not even going to tread waters on Crysis on Cod4.

I've always wondered about external GPU's and "when" and "how" they would play there roll in the near future. I remember when dell tried it in their Precision systems, where they input a FireGL in the Docking station. It was very handy for designers and engineers at that time but was VERY pricy ($1100 upgrade at that time).

I think this technology if its not proprietary ( if they can convert to HDMI adapter or something) will change the game on notebook gaming developement.

just my opinion...

//sorry for the rant
