: 78 th | | | to be honest, i'm considering buying stock right now. they're only writing down about $250 million which isn't really that much for them to absorb, especially with their new GPU's starting to ship. an optimist sees $$ in such times. |

Basso, I know you clean your stuff regularly, so you should be fine
| I would argue that 3-5 years ago the issue was worse...
Back then we were taking high power/heat CPU's and putting them into laptops... An example of this is the Intel Prescott's, It was not uncommon to see a 3.0-3.6GHz desktop cpu put in a laptop...
Even in a desktop, those CPU's often ran at 130F-ish at idle...

| I have one. a G41 Desktop replacement with a 3.06 HT P4. I kid you not, the backside thickness is at least 3" just for the heatsink. It uses TWO CPU fans, and blows more air than you could believe. There was even news that the top end P4s were junk, that they could never run at max speed because the onboard temp device wouldn't allow it to use enough power because it got immediately too hot running full bore.
But you're right, things are a little more calmed down now. Except the new top-end Phenom has like a 140 watt TDP, some mobos can't give it enough power and that's another thing against AMD. I think the Extreme P4 wasn't any more than 140, at least on paper

| | | I would consider buying GM stock as well if it gets down into the $5 range. that's very dangerous territory. GM won't fold. And when they get back into the 20$ range, that's an instant 4x profit

| | | yeah, those P4 laptops were awful. 15 pounds of heavy cooling, and they still didn't do it. thank god for Core mobile and Turions.

well maybe one. at college I didnt pay attention at all to my laptop really. too busy. When I got orange box I was playing portal, alt tabbed out and noticed my gpu was at 85c. lol. I cleaned it out right after that but how long had my gpu been that hot? Who knows. It still overclocks just as well and doesnt artifact or anything. That's why I stick with nvidia over ati.
