| | | Lenovo IdeaCenter D400, Windows Home Server Yeah HP, Buffalo and whole bunch of other companies are making Windows Home Servers now so what? Well Lenovo has one coming out. One thing you can say for sure it will have the typical IBM color scheme, will be well built, as far as how power efficient it will be only time will tell but as long as it fares better than using a separate computer as a storage server and is priced right it should sell. Lenovo Reveal Their First Home Server – The IdeaCenter D400
Looks like Lenovo just spilt the beans on their first Windows Home Server model, the IdeaCenter D400. The company just posted a teaser image of the product and have promised more information will be released this week.
Having a little dig around the web uncovers additional information from a number of Chinese websites. The D400 was released over in Asia on August 5th, and as you can see from the shots below looks similar in many ways to Acer’s Aspire easyStore Home Server with four hot swappable drive bays housed in a black plastic, cube shaped chassis. | Link for more pictures and info. |

| | | The entire point of WHS is to make storage and redundancy invisible to the consumer. They just add drives and go. |

| | | Basically it's a dumb down software RAID. They have what they call folder duplication. They copy the same file to at least two drives if one fails you replace it and the files that were on that drive get copied to that drive again. If that makes sense...now that's the dumb down answer. If you want to know more google it. It's actually somewhat confusing how they did what they did but in the same respect it makes sense.
On a side note I have the Acer aspire easystore...any notice the similarities of them? Basically same thing...slightly different look and naturally different support. If anyone was curious about power consumption mine with 1TB WD Green drive and two 1TB WD Black drives uses about 40 watts if I remember correctly while transfer and streaming files.

| | | That's a sweet setup. I believe Coffee's manifesto a few weeks ago is correct in that devices like these will play a big part in homes in the coming years. |

if It uses an efficient (hd space wise) system like raid 5 ?
if there was easy data recovery in cases of mb/disk controller failure ? |

| | | I forget if the Drobo Pro has RAID or not. I know you can mix-n-match drives of different sizes with these home server systems and they just do their best to maximize the available space while keeping redundant copies of your data.
Usually the ones that have an embedded Linux version on the back end have RAID, most of the time its software based though. | |
