upgrade for aoe3

ok well i currently have a laptop with the following specs

1.8 pentium m dothan
2 gigs of ram
ati 9700 mobility with 128 mb

i have a desktop with

p4 2.0
ati radeon 9600se 128mb
512mb ram

now these are just the basic specs, i am going to have to look up the cache etc, but i just got aoe3 for xmas and it runs on the laptop so long as i turn a good portion of the graphics down(i run it at 1400by1050 but i dont see much difference when i turn it down to 1024by768). the game still looks decent, but when i have set all to high and see the difference that i could have, i obviously want more. so i have come up with the idea that perhaps it would be possible to upgrade my desktop enough to run the game on there. if i were to do so, i would like to keep costs to a minimum, but lets say 250bucks american. would it make sense to head over to newegg and get a new graphics card, or would i need to add more ram, and processor, motherboard? if this is possible then i fall into the pit of what to get so i dont spend so much but still get some improvement? any advice? what other information would be the most crucial for me to find out so someone could more accurately give me some advice? also my next machine i would like to be an amd 64 bit. i know some setups of that chip are not too pricy. This also brings up the issue of how do i know which is better for which card, the memory, or the model?

i consider my self computer savy, but have never bothered to get too deep with the fsb etc for processors and or video cards? advice?

You should check out the new ATI 9800 cards of Nvidia 5700le and up. RAM would also help, like upgrading to 768mb or 1GB. I have 768 in my desktop and a P4 1.6 and a 256mb Nvidia Geforce 5700 le and i can run BF2 perfectly at 1024x768

still shouldnt i be able to run the game on my laptop? or does a 256 ram video card really matter over a 128? also would ati tray tools make a difference? i cant find any tutorials on how to use them.
