Question Crimson Skies anyone?
O.k., guys, don't laugh, but one of my all-time favorites is that old Microsoft/FASA game Crimson Skies...

Anyway, the problem with that game is that on any of my newer machines (say, a Dell XPS M170, with NVidia 7800 GTX, Windows XP), the fonts in some of the text boxes in various dialogs and on-screen messages are corrupt, and only display as longish colored blocks, so you can't read most of the menus. Interestingly, that only happens with some of the boxes, not all. In some the fonts are perfectly fine. Just in case that helps, I also have a somewhat older Dell Precision M60 laptop (also with an NVidia card) where the game runs without any problems.

Does anybody have any solution for this? I searched all over the web, and came up with nothing that works. None of the compatibility modes, switching off font smoothing, or switching to a lower color depth, help in any way. The game itself runs fine otherwise... Maybe there is some graphics driver option that might help?

Btw, I would be perfectly willing to even pay somebody to find me a solution. Heck, I'd happily pay what I usually have to pay to buy a new game. Did I say I really loved that game?

I'm also having trouble playing old school win 95/98 games like Red Alert and Starcraft... i finally just gave in and re-bought the Decade pack and stuff...

Yeah, well, like I said, if there was any commercial solution, or new version to buy, I'd buy it. But there isn't, as far as I know...

If so:
DOSBox, a x86 emulator with DOS

Nope, it is a Windows game, needs at least DX7 and hardware acceleration.

A long time ago I tried to play "Age of Mythology" and the game worked perfectly except that all the menus, dialog boxes, and even elements of the in game hud did not have any text written on them.

I spent some time thinking that the game fonts were corrupted and tried various fixes to no avail. Then just out of strange luck I changed my fonts for MSN messenger from blue to black. The next time I booted up the game...text was there. Apparently the blue text I used in messenger match the button and hud background perfectly.

I never did figure out why MSN messenger font was in anyway tied to the games font except that it could have been modifying the windows theme. This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it has to be one of the strangest fixes I've ever found.

Also, I should note that you may not use this code in your own applications. If you want to reduce a variable by 89, you'll have to find another way to do it.

It could very well be a problem of not having the correct font installed.

When you install Steam via Wine in Linux, none of the text is displayed until you install the proper Windows font.

Crimson Skies was one of my favorite games ever on XBox. (Besides Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition)

Have you ever played Dub Edition? It is so extremely customizable.
