EA Launches New Steam-Like Service...However

So EA shut down EA Link and launched their new EA Store which uses the EA Downloader.

According to EvilAvatar Member Cutter99, that any purchases made through the store only allows for an initial download for up to 6 months. If a cusomter wants to play the game afterwards again they must pay an additional $6 that extends the peroid to 2 years.

So pretty much its another EA attempt to nickel and dime you. I'm not too sure if they think that they can compete with STEAM like this, but I sure as well won't buy anything from them. I'm now even considering boycotting their boxed games, with the exception of Madden.

I'm still waiting to find out how Cutter99 knows this. Will update when I find out...so if you're going to buy something off the EA Store, be careful.

When it came time to go find EA Link, it turns out it doesn't exist. It redirects you to "EA Store." I hunted for hours for any link to the new "EA Downloader" - even poured over the FAQs/helpfiles. Just to try, I went right up to the end of the "Buy Online" option for BF2142 - and you can see it slips a nasty 6$ extra for "extended downloading access" or whatever. I hammered their customer service - no answers.

In the end, I got a copy of EA Downloader from some foreign site (yay google,) despite my EA account still showing that I "owned" BF2142 - it showed a "purchase date" of Sept 17, 2007. So - in six months will I no longer be able to download this if I need to? It loads EA downloader now when i launch the program, so will it not let me even launch the game after six months?! Who knows, EA hasn't said anything to me.

boycotts don't really work if you still buy the stuff you really want.

here is the info about extending it

Quote:
Extended Download Service - Upon payment of the specified fee, Digital River, Inc. ("DR") agrees to provide you (the "End User") a service that enables the End User to make multiple downloads of digital computer software products (a "Product" or "Products") purchased in a single order (an "Order") and downloaded from this website (the "Site") for a period of 2 (two) years after the End User purchases the Product (the "Service").

Once again EA FAILS!

Steam at its worse > EA Downloader/Link/Downloader etc.

Rest assured if EA is involved it will be an utter and complete fiasco.

ThePro loves playing with their D-key!
EA sucks, meaning this will suck even more.
It's really stupid of them to have a fee for redownloading after a certain amount of time.
